RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Bowling Green State University women's golf team could not maintain the momentum built in the second round and, as a result, slid to an eighth place finish on Saturday (April 7) at the 2012 Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Colonel Classic.
The Falcons were in fifth place after 36 holes and shot a 304 in the second round. However, the team posted a 321 in the final round to match their score over the first 18 holes. That was just enough to slip below three other teams in the standings.
BGSU's final tally of 946 (321-304-321) was two shots behind Ohio and tournament host EKU, who tied for sixth at 344. Fifth place Ferris State finished three shots ahead of the Falcons.
Mid-American Conference foe Akron won the tournament with a composite 914, as they finished seven shots ahead of Toledo and Morehead State.
Individually, #Shelby Wilson shot a 79 to finish with a 229 and a tie for seventh place. She was only one shot outside of the top five and finished just six strokes behind the eventual winner, Jenna Hague of Ball State.
Wilson's seventh-place finish is her second visit to the top ten this season. it is also her fourth top-20 finish. She also assumes the team lead in scoring average (78.33).
Paula DiFrancesco tied for 29th place after carding an 83 on Saturday. Her two-day total was 238 (79-76-83).
Falcon teammates Bailey Arnold and Amy Ruthenberg finished the tournament tied with matching scores of 241. Arnold had BGSU's best round on Saturday (78) after rounds of 83 and 80 on Friday. Ruthenberg carded rounds of 80, 77 and 84.
Kelsey Benson played as an individual and shot a composite 250 (83-81-86) over the event's 54 holes.
Patricia Holt also competed for the Falcons and shot an 81 on Saturday.
BGSU now turns its attention to its annual home event, the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational. The 36-hole event will take place next weekend, with individual rounds on Saturday and Sunday (April 14 and 15). More details will be available later this week.
