Georgia Tech Beats Falcons In Four Sets

Bloomington, Ind. – Danielle Tonyan had a match-high 17 kills and the Bowling Green volleyball team hit .448 in the second set, but the Falcons were unable to sustain that efficiency in a 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-17 loss to Georgia Tech on the opening day of the Indiana Invitational Friday night.

After struggling through the first set, Bowling Green jumped out quickly in the second stanza. Lindsey Butterfield had a kill and two blocks in a 5-0 run that put the Falcons on top 7-2 and Georgia Tech never got closer than three points the rest of the way. After the Yellow Jackets made it 12-9, BGSU went on a 4-1 run on two Tonyan kills to build a cushion again. Tonyan closed out the set with kills on the Falcons' final two points for the 25-19 win.

In that set, Tonyan had eight kills on 13 attempts and Leah Shaw had three kills on three swings. The Falcons added three of their five blocks in the match during that frame.

“We played our best volleyball of the season in the second set against Georgia Tech,” BGSU head coach Danijela Tomic said. “We served very aggressively and our hitters were able to produce 16 kills with only 3 errors. Our team saw how good we could be once we learn how to play consistently throughout the whole match and when we get contribution from all six players on the court. Unfortunately, we had too many highs and lows and that's something we have to work on changing.”

Georgia Tech took control of the BGSU lows and answered back by starting the third set with an 8-1 run to cruise to the victory. In the fourth, Bowling Green led 12-10 but the Yellow Jackets scored 15 of the final 20 points to win the match.

After Tonyan, no other Falcon had more than six kills, though others contributed to the effort in other ways. Paige Penrod had six kills, but added four aces and seven digs. Butterfield had six kills, five digs, and two blocks. Shaw had four kills, three blocks and an ace.

Georgia Tech improved to 4-0 with the win, while Bowling Green falls to 0-3. The Falcons will play two more matches in the Indiana Invitational Saturday, playing host Indiana at noon and Cleveland State at 5 p.m.
