With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-3-1 overall and 3-0-0 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 1-9-1 and 0-2-1, respectively.
Falcon freshman Jessica Jarvis gave BGSU a 1-0 lead late in the first half, knocking home a cross from sophomore Sidney Huth. But, the Eagles knotted the score on a free kick by Stephanie Clarke early in the second half, and Vultaggio scored off of a Cara Cutaia feed in the 69th minute to give the home team the lead for good.
The Eagles held a 21-14 advantage in total shots, including a 12-3 margin after halftime. Eastern had a narrow 7-6 edge in shots on goal on the afternoon, with both BGSU freshman Jenna Underwood and EMU goalkeeper Jenna O'Dell making five saves.
The Falcons had 11 first-half shot attempts to the home team's nine, including shots from freshman Demy Whitaker and senior Leah Johnson less than 30 seconds apart with 15 minutes gone. Whitaker's shot was stopped by O'Dell, as was Johnson's effort from 10 yards out.
The latter shot came after a cross from junior Kaitlyn Tobin, who hit a ball from the right side of the penalty area. Johnson, located near the left post, hit her shot off the short-hop, and got a great deal of force behind her shot, but O'Dell was able to block the ball and an EMU defender cleared it out of danger.
BG finally broke through with just 1:28 left before the intermission. A Falcon flurry began with a Huth corner kick, and saw juniors Tracy Togba and Jenny Fowler combine for three shots in the span of roughly 15 seconds. Togba saw a pair of shots blocked by Eastern defenders, and Fowler's follow-up try also was deflected.
The ball went to Huth on the right side of the penalty area, near the end line, and the sophomore slotted a short crossing ball through the middle to an open Jarvis. The freshman knocked the ball home from several yards out for the second goal of her young career.
The goal snapped a scoreless streak of 335:24 for BGSU, dating to the Illinois State game of Sept. 14. It also gave the Falcons the lead in a match for the first time since August 26.
In the second half, however, it didn't take long for the home team to get the tying goal. The Falcons were called for a handball just outside the box, as a cross bounced and hit a BGSU player in the arm. Clarke took the ensuing free kick and made no mistake, with her shot finding the left side of the net. With 43:35 left in the second half, the teams were even again, at 1-1.
Vultaggio, celebrating a birthday on Friday, gave her team the lead with 21:47 left in regulation. She took a pass from Cutaia on the right side of the box and neatly placed a low shot into the far corner of the net from approximately six yards out.
The Falcons had a few chances the remainder of the way, but O'Dell was equal to the task. She grabbed a free kick off the boot of Amanda Nelson, with a host of players from each team racing into the box, then saved a shot from senior Sarah VonderBrink moments later. BG was unable to get a tying goal, and suffered a one-goal loss for the fourth time in the last five matches and the fifth time in seven September contests.
The Falcons return to the road on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30), heading to Kalamazoo to face Western Michigan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
