BGSU Travels to Michigan for Two Weekend Matches

Falcons begin four-game road swing by facing Eastern, Western Michigan

Then, on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30), the Brown and Orange will face Western Michigan University in a 1:00 p.m. start at the WMU Soccer Complex in Kalamazoo. Each of BGSU's next four matches are against MAC West Division foes.

The Falcons are 1-8-1 overall, and BG opened MAC play with a narrow loss and a tie in a pair of home matches last weekend. On Friday (Sept. 21), Ohio got a goal in the first minute of the second half for a 1-0 win at a rainy Cochrane Field. Sunday afternoon (Sept. 23), the Brown and Orange battled MAC East Division favorite Kent State to a 0-0, double-overtime draw.
Freshman Jenna Underwood made five saves in each of those matches, and had a goals-against average of just 0.45 on the weekend, giving up only one goal in 200 minutes of action. Her saves percentage was .909 in the two matches, and the KSU match marked the first shutout of her collegiate career.
Sophomore Sidney Huth leads the Falcons in scoring this season, with four points on a pair of goals. A pair of juniors, Tracy Togba and Madeline Wideman, each have three points this fall, while two freshmen have two points each. First-year Falcon Jessica Jarvis has one goal this year, while classmate Demy Whitaker leads the Brown and Orange with two assists.
In goal, fifth-year senior Becca Ison has made six starts and Underwood four. Ison has 25 saves and a goals-against average of 2.90 this year to date. Underwood, who has appeared in five matches in total, has 19 saves and a 1.35 GAA.
After Sunday's result against Kent State, the Falcons now have a record of 10-4-5 in the all-time series with the Golden Flashes, and BG is now 5-1-5 against KSU at Cochrane Field.
BGSU has not allowed a goal in a home game against Kent State in over a decade. The Flashes captured a 1-0 overtime decision on Oct. 26, 2001, at Cochrane. Since that 'Golden Goal', BGSU goalkeepers Ali Shingler, Alexa Arsenault, Underwood and a host of defenders have combined to keep KSU off the Cochrane Field scoreboard for a total of 710 minutes. Shingler (2003 and two matches in 2005) and Arsenault (2008, '09 and '10) had three home shutouts apiece vs. Kent State, prior to Underwood's clean sheet on Sunday. BG 'keepers have combined for 52 saves in those seven matches.
Sunday's match marked the 10th overtime battle in the 19-game series between the Falcons and Kent State, and BG is 3-2-5 in OT matchups vs. the Flashes.
All time, the Falcons now have a record of 19-19-32 in overtime games in program history, including a 10-14-14 mark at Cochrane Field. BGSU is 7-3-16 in overtime road games, and the Falcons are 2-2-2 in neutral-site matches that have gone to OT.
Eastern Michigan is 5-3-1 this season, and the Eagles are off to a 2-0-0 start in MAC play. Last weekend, Eastern went on the road and picked up a 1-0 victory at Northern Illinois on Friday, before posting an impressive 3-0 road win against defending MAC champion Toledo.
Eastern is 2-1-1 at home, 2-2-0 on the road and 1-0-0 in neutral-site matches this fall. BGSU and EMU have two common opponents, as both the Falcons and the Eagles defeated IUPUI, but lost to Michigan State.
Cara Cutaia and Bianca Rossi have 12 points apiece this season, while Angela Vultaggio has 10. Rossi has a team-best five goals to date, while Cutaia has four goals and four assists. Vultaggio has scored three times, and she is tied with Cutaia for the team's assists lead, with four. Jenna O'Dell has played every minute in net, and has 59 saves, four shutouts and a GAA of just 1.08. Coach Scott Hall's team has nearly doubled last year's win total already. He returned 15 letterwinners from last year's club that went 3-13-2 overall and 3-7-1 in the MAC.
The Falcons trail Eastern Michigan, 10-8-1, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Brown and Orange captured last year's meeting. Huth scored in overtime to give BG a 2-1 win at Cochrane Field (Oct. 7, 2011), snapping a three-game EMU series winning streak. The teams' last game in Ypsilanti was a wild affair, as BG and Eastern combined for nine second-half goals in a 6-4 Eagle win (Oct. 1, 2010). BG is 3-4-0 at home and 5-6-1 on the road vs. EMU over the years.

Western Michigan enters the week with a 4-4-2 record, and the Broncos are 0-0-2 in MAC action, heading into a Friday matchup with Central Michigan. Last weekend, WMU played to 0-0 draws with both Toledo (at home on Friday) and Northern Illinois (on the road on Sunday). The Broncos have not allowed a goal in their last 308 minutes of soccer.
BG and WMU have four common opponents, with the Broncos going 1-3-0 and BG 0-4-0 against those schools. Each team has met MSU, Illinois State, Valparaiso and Loyola (Ill.), with the Broncos picking up a win over ISU.
Rachel Chaney leads the Broncos with four goals and eight points on the year, while both Aubrey Sudomier and Kylie Nylen have five points, including two goals. In net, Michelle Watson has played all 10 matches, and has 26 saves and a GAA of just 0.95. First-year head coach Nate Norman inherited 12 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's 14-8-0 team that went 8-3-0 in the MAC.
The Falcons trail Western Michigan, 11-7-1, in that series, and the Broncos have won three consecutive meetings. A year ago, Western picked up a 2-0 win at Cochrane Field (Oct. 21, 2011). The two previous seasons saw the host Broncos come up with a pair of one-goal victories in Kalamazoo, including a 1-0, double-OT win in the last meeting at WMU two saesons ago (Oct. 22, 2010). BGSU is 4-3-1 at home, 1-8-0 on the road and 2-0-0 in neutral-site matches vs. the Broncos. The Falcons' lone road win in the series was a 1-0 triumph in 2008.
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons will head to the MAC's 'West Coast' for a match against Northern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 5. Then, BGSU will meet arch-rival Toledo in the Glass City on Sunday, Oct. 7, before returning home to face Buffalo (Oct. 12) and Akron (Oct. 14) the following weekend.
