Ann Arbor, Mich. – Brooke Pleger set another personal best in the weight throw as the Bowling Green track and field team competed at the Harvey-Simmons Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, Saturday. There were no team scores at the meet but consisted of competitors from Michigan, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Detroit and Bowling Green.
Pleger won her third consecutive meet to stay unbeaten in the weight throw, besting her top previous toss of 61-feet-7 just a week ago. Her heave of 61-10.25 was more than three inches better and more than four feet further than any other competitor. Having already qualified for the Mid-American Conference Championship, Pleger's throw was the fourth best in the conference this year.
Kayla Velasquez followed Pleger with a fourth-place finish in the weight throw, posting a mark of 51-11.25. Nicolette Johnson was sixth with a throw of 50-5.5. In the 400, Allison Weimer placed third with a time of 58.52 and Taylor Rambo was fifth in 59.46. Dana Gates was fifth in the long jump at 17-1.25 and the 1600 relay team of Natalie Sommerville, Rambo, Felicia Jefferson and Demetra Taylor was third at 3:59.01.
“It was great to see Brooke continue to win and improve,” BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. “She is close to breaking through to the next tier of performance. As a team, we saw some good efforts and gained much needed experience today. But, as a whole, we have a lot of work ahead to get this program where it needs to go.”
Bowling Green will be back in action Friday as the team hosts its second meet of the year, the Tom Wright Classic. All events will take place in Perry Field House beginning with field events at 5 pm and running events at 6 pm.
