BGSU NOTES | EMU NOTES
QUICK HITS
• Sunday's game is a meeting of the last two MAC Tournament champions ... the Falcons won the league tourney title in 2011, defeating Eastern Michigan, 51-46, in the championship game in downtown Cleveland (March 12, 2011) ... last season, EMU captured the MAC Tournament crown, defeating Central Michigan, 72-71, on Paige Redditt's layup with just 1.8 seconds left.
• The 2012-13 versions of the Falcons and Eagles look very different than the 2011 and '12 league tournament champions ... both teams have first-year head coaches – Tory Verdi for EMU and Jennifer Roos for BGSU – and have undergone personnel changes due to graduation, injuries, etc.
• Only five players who saw action in that 2011 MAC Tournament title game remain on the 2012-13 rosters ... they combined for just five points ... BGSU's Carmel, Ind., duo of Chrissy Steffen and Danielle Havel each played in that contest, with Steffen scoring three points and Havel two ... for the Eagles, Olivia Fouty, India Hairston and Desyree Thomas all saw court time but did not score.
• Last year's BGSU-EMU meeting saw the Falcons pick up a 70-54 win at the Stroh Center (Jan. 22, 2012) ... current BG players combined for 60 of the team's 70 points in that game ... that group was led by Alexis Rogers, who scored a career-high 30 points ... Eastern got 29 points from Tavelyn James, who was a senior a season ago ... returning EMU players combined for 18 points in last year's meeting with the Falcons.
• For the first time in over two years, the Falcons are not in first place in the MAC's East Division ... BGSU suffered a 57-54 loss to Miami Thursday night (Jan. 24) at the Stroh Center ... the win vaulted MU to the top of the East with a 4-1 league ledger ... BG is one of three teams in the division with 3-2 MAC marks.
• The last time BG dropped out of first place in the East was on Jan. 15, 2011 ... the Falcons suffered a 44-43 loss at Kent State, moving the Golden Flashes to 4-0 in the MAC, a game ahead of BG ... in fact, the Falcons still sat in second place at the end of the month, with a 5-3 league record after a 66-55 loss at Western Michigan ... but, a BG win at Northern Illinois (Feb. 1, 2011), coupled with a KSU loss to Eastern Michigan, moved the Falcons into a first-place tie with the Flashes ... that win at NIU was the first of an 11-game winning streak that extended through the second half of the MAC regular-season schedule as well as the league tournament ... the 11th and final win in that streak was the 51-46 victory over EMU in the MAC Tournament championship ... see how we tied that all together?
• Last season, BGSU led the East Division early and often, going 10-0 to begin league play ... the Falcons clinched the divisional crown with a home win over Miami on Feb. 25, 2012, and BG went on to win the regular-season title outright.
• Thursday's loss to Miami ended a streak in which the Falcons had held four consecutive MAC opponents to fewer than 50 points, a school record.
• Overall, BGSU had not held four-straight opponents to less than 50 points since early 1975 (Wittenberg, Kent State, Cedarville and Miami; Jan. 21 to Feb. 1, 1975).
• Through 18 games this season, the Falcons have held the opponent to fewer than 50 points on eight occasions ... the school record is 12 such games, amassed by the 1973-74 team ... the '74-75 club kept 11 opponents under the 50-point mark ... the 'modern-day' record is nine games, by the 2006-07 BG team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
• The 60-point mark has proven to be a barometer of BGSU's success this season ... the Falcons have a record of 12-0 when scoring 60 or more points this year, and BG is 0-6 when the offense is held under the 60-point plateau.
• The Falcons' conference opponents have averaged just 44.2 points per game and shot only 30.9 percent from the field over the first five games.
• The Falcons have displayed incredible balance during the conference portion of the schedule to date ... in three of the first five league contests, 10 different players each saw double-digit minutes on the court ... nine of 10 Falcons scored in the Kent State game on Jan. 10, and all 10 players scored at least three points against Ball State (Jan. 13) and at least two points at Ohio (Jan. 20).
• BGSU's balance is evident in a glance at the Falcons' MAC-only statistics (see page 15 of these notes) ... only one player is averaging more than 8.0 points per game in league games (Rogers at 10.2 ppg), but six Falcons are averaging at least 6.0 ppg ... three other Falcons are averaging at least 4.0 ppg in league games, and all 11 BG players who have seen action have 2.8 ppg or more in conference play.
• In the five MAC games to date, BGSU has enjoyed a 123-31 advantage in bench scoring.
• All 11 Falcons who have seen action this season have scored in double figures at least once.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons enter the Eastern Michigan game with an overall record of 12-6 on the season ... BGSU is 3-2 in the MAC after suffering a narrow 57-54 loss to Miami at the Stroh Center on Thursday (Jan. 24) ... that loss came on the heels of back-to-back wins by a combined 57 points ... BG posted a 73-42 win over visiting Ball State (Jan. 16), then opened the road portion of the league schedule with a 67-41 win at Ohio last Sunday afternoon (Jan. 20).
• After going undefeated in the month of December, the Falcons are now 3-3 in January ... BG lost, 59-56, to UCF in the final non-conference game (Jan. 4), before opening MAC play with a 69-33 win over Kent State (Jan. 10) ... BG then dropped a 48-38 decision to Toledo (Jan. 13) before bouncing back with the 31-point win over BSU.
• The 6-0 December run was capped off by a double-digit win over a nationally-ranked foe, as BG downed #14/15 Dayton, 65-40, on Dec. 30 ... the month also included double-digit victories over Colorado State, Butler and Wyoming at home and Northwestern on the road ... BG won a 64-61 decision at Massachusetts (Dec. 19) prior to breaking for the holidays.
• BGSU opened the 2012-13 campaign by splitting the first four games ... the losses came against a pair of teams currently ranked in the top 25 – at Purdue (45-59; Nov. 19) and against Villanova, with the latter setback coming by a 53-42 score in Las Vegas (Nov. 24).
• The Brown and Orange bounced back with a 64-54 win over host UNLV (Nov. 25), before falling to Temple, 70-56, at the Stroh (Nov. 28) ... again, though, after losing to a Philadelphia Big Five school, the Falcons responded with a win over a Mountain West Conference foe, as BG topped CSU to begin the aforementioned six-game win streak.
• The Falcons are 7-4 at home, 5-1 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site games this season to date ... BGSU has a scoring margin of +9.3, and the Falcons lead the MAC in rebounding margin, at +5.2.

Steffen is shooting a MAC-best 83.7 percent from the free-throw line, having gone 36-of-43 from the stripe.
• Junior Jillian Halfhill has 8.7 ppg along with a team-leading 2.9 assists per contest ... the 5-6 point guard also has 4.4 rebounds per game, tying for third on the team.
• Fifth-year senior Danielle Havel has 6.7 ppg, and is near the top of the team lists in numerous categories ... Havel is second on the Falcons in both rebounds (5.3 rpg) and assists (2.3 apg), and is tied for the team lead in blocked shots ... she has a BG-best four games with 10 or more rebounds this season to date ... Havel is shooting a team-best 44.6% from the field.
• Freshman Miriam Justinger has 5.6 ppg, while sophomore Jasmine Matthews averages 5.5 ppg ... Justinger is 12-of-27 (44.4%) from three-point land and 30-of-37 (81.1%) from the free-throw line this year to date ... Matthews, who has missed four of the five MAC games, still is third on the Falcons in three-pointers, having hit 17 long-range attempts on the season.
• BGSU's two post players off the bench, senior Allison Papenfuss and junior Jill Stein have 4.8 and 3.6 ppg ... Stein has 4.4 rebounds per contest, while Papenfuss has 4.0 rpg ... Stein has blocked 12 shots to tie Havel for the team lead, with Papenfuss right behind with 11 blocks this year.
• A pair of newcomers, freshman Bailey Cairnduff and junior Katrina Salinas, are averaging 3.4 and 3.1 points, respectively ... Cairnduff had seven points off the bench against Miami on Thursday night ... sophomore Deborah Hoekstra has played in 11 games and is averaging 2.7 ppg ... All three players have made at least seven three-pointers this season.
• Each of the aforementioned 11 players has scored in double digits at least once this season.
• Seven players have seen action in all 18 games this year ... that list includes Halfhill, Havel, Justinger, Papenfuss, Salinas, Steffen and Stein ... Rogers has played in 17 games, with Cairnduff seeing action in 15, Matthews 13 and Hoekstra 11 ... senior Simone Eli has been sidelined due to injury and has yet to see game action this season.
• Halfhill, Havel and Steffen each have started all 18 games to date, while Rogers has made 17 starts ... Cairnduff started the first four games of the season, while Matthews was in the starting lineup for each of the next nine contests ... Justinger made her first collegiate start in the KSU game, and has been in the starting five for each of the five MAC games.
• In MAC play, BGSU's scoring is incredibly balanced, as seven players are averaging at least 5.0 ppg, but only one Falcon has more than 8.0 points per game ... Rogers leads that scoring list at 10.2 ppg, followed by Justinger (8.0 ppg), Papenfuss (7.0 ppg) and Halfhill (6.8 ppg) ... Halfhill also has 3.8 assists per contest and a league-best 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio in MAC play ... Steffen and Salinas each have 6.0 ppg in MAC action, with Hoekstra at 5.0 ppg ... Rogers leads the Falcons with 6.0 rebounds per game against conference foes, while Stein and Papenfuss have 5.8 rpg apiece ... Havel has 5.0 boards per game in MAC play ... Papenfuss is shooting 53.6% from the field, good for fifth in the MAC ... she has gone 15-for-28 in league action ... all 11 players are averaging at least 11.0 minutes played, with no Falcon above 26.6 mpg in MAC matches.
• Head coach Jennifer Roos welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a year ago ... the Brown and Orange went 24-7 overall and 14-2 in the MAC in 2011-12 ... two of those starters, Steffen and Rogers, were selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team in 2012-13.
• Havel, Rogers and Steffen each started all 31 games a year ago, while Matthews made 21 starts as a frosh ... Halfhill played in all 31 games, starting the first 10.

EMU has played four of the first five MAC games away from home ... the Eagles opened conference play with a win at Western Michigan, then suffered losses to Central Michigan, Toledo and Miami before downing KSU ... the UT game was Eastern's lone MAC home game so far ... EMU suffered a blow, losing the team's top-two scorers several weeks ago ... one of those two, sophomore forward Olivia Fouty, was lost for the season due to injury ... she was averaging 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game through the first seven contests ... junior G/F Natachia Watkins and senior center India Hairston are averaging 9.9 and 8.6 ppg, respectively, while freshman guard Bianca Cage has 8.4 ppg off the bench ... THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Eastern Michigan, 47-14, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has won the last 10 meetings ... last season, Alexis Rogers scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Falcons to a 70-54 victory at the Stroh Center (Jan. 22, 2012) ... BG's last trip to Ypsilanti also saw a Falcon reach the 30-point mark, as Lauren Prochaska had 37 points – the second-highest total in school history and a BGSU record for a road game – in a 60-55 win at the Convocation Center two years ago (Feb. 12, 2011) ... the teams met exactly one month later in that 2010-11 season, with the Brown and Orange outlasting EMU, 51-46, in the championship game of the MAC Tournament in Cleveland (March 12, 2011) ...
