THIS WEEKEND
This weekend's matches pit the Falcons against the two teams who are just ahead of them in the MAC East Division standings. BGSU is 0-5-1 in conference play to date, while Buffalo is 1-5-0 and Akron 1-4-1 in MAC matches.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 0-11-1 on the season, and BGSU is 0-5-1 in Mid-American Conference play. Five of BG's losses this fall have been by a single goal. Last weekend, the Brown and Orange battled Northern Illinois to a scoreless, double-overtime draw on Friday night (Oct. 11), then dropped a 2-0 decision to Toledo Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13) at Cochrane Field.
Head coach Lindsay Basalyga and her staff returned 11 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a year ago. The 2012 club finished with an overall record of 1-17-1 and a MAC mark of 0-10-1. Ten of the Falcons' losses last fall, including six in league play, came by a single goal.
Six of BGSU's first eight matches this year came on the road, including non-league games at Cleveland State (Aug. 25), IUPUI (Sept. 8), Michigan State (Sept. 13) and Detroit (Sept. 17). BG's first three home matches all were 2-1 setbacks, including overtime vs. Butler (Aug. 31) and Evansville (Sept. 22). The Falcons dropped a 2-1 decision in regulation vs. Eastern Michigan (Oct. 4), and BG has also faced Western Michigan (Oct. 6), NIU and UT at home this fall.
Senior Madeline Wideman leads the Falcons in scoring, with seven points on the season. Wideman and fellow senior Kaitlyn Tobin each have two goals apiece this fall. Tobin scored in the MAC opener at Ohio (Sept. 27), while Wideman had a goal at Kent State two days later. Tobin is second on the team with four points this year.
Junior Ashley Garr and freshmen Taylor Bucaro and Haley Malaczewski each have one goal on the season. Malaczewski came off the bench to score her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate match, at CSU. Garr scored the first goal of her BGSU career vs. Butler, and Bucaro scored on a blast from distance in the Eastern Michigan match.
Wideman leads the Falcons with three assists on the year, while classmate Alyssa Carmack and junior Sidney Huth each have one assist apiece this fall to date.
Wideman has been involved in the scoring of five of the Falcons' seven goals this year.
In goal, redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel has started all 12 matches this season. She has a total of 94 saves, a saves percentage of .790 and a goals-against average of 2.26. True freshman Michelle Denley has seen action in a pair of games in relief, both in MAC play, and has played just under 113 minutes this fall.
BGSU's list of returning starters includes the team's two 2013 co-captains, Carmack and Jenny Fowler. Carmack was one of just two players to start all 19 matches last fall, playing at a center-back position. Fowler, a fifth-year Falcon, made 17 starts in 2012.
Other returning letterwinners include seniors Tobin, Wideman and Ivi Casagrande, redshirt junior Kylie Briem, true juniors Garr, Huth and Kaylee Draper and sophomores Emma Norris and Haley Parkinson. Huth led the Brown and Orange in scoring with three goals and seven points a year ago, while Wideman had a pair of goals and five total points in '12.
Cadel, the lone returnee among the goalkeepers, is in her first playing season with the Falcons, having sat out the 2012 season as a redshirt. The goalkeeping corps also includes true freshmen Denley and Jenna DiTusa.
Cadel is one of three Falcons on the current roster who did not see action last fall. Fourth-year Falcon Kailey Paszko and redshirt freshman Lexie Schmidt both missed the 2012 campaign due to injury.
Denley and DiTusa are two of the nine true freshmen on the roster. That list also includes Bucaro, Malaczewski, Paige Amodio, Sabrina Cisneros, Jessica Creech, Taylor Dackin and Melissa Needham.
Carmack has played all 1109-plus minutes for the Falcons this season. Amodio has been on the field for 1003 minutes, while Cadel (996), Wideman (961) and Garr (946) each have played more than 900 minutes this fall to date.
CADEL, FALCONS AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Cadel leads the MAC, and ranks among the top 10 in the nation, in several statistical categories. Cadel has 94 saves in 12 contests, an average of 7.83 per game. She ranks first in the MAC in both total saves and saves per game. Cadel is eighth in the nation in saves per game, and is tied for eighth in the country in total stops.
As a team, BGSU is fifth in the country in saves per game.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• Redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel had a goals-against average of just 0.90 and a saves percentage of .900 in the Falcons' two matches last weekend. She made 10 saves en route to the first shutout of her young career, as BGSU tied Northern Illinois, 0-0 in double-OT, Friday night. Cadel added eight more saves in Sunday's match against Toledo, and has 94 total saves this season.
• Cadel is in her first playing season with the Falcons, but her total of 94 saves ties her for fifth on the BGSU career list. Becca Ison, a senior on last year's team, is fourth on that list after ending her BG tenure with 143 saves. Each of the top-three players on the list – Erika Flanders, Alexa Arsenault and Ali Shingler – made over 330 saves in their respective careers.
• Cadel has moved into ninth place on the BGSU single-season saves list. Flanders holds the school record with 137 total saves in the 2002 season. The complete lists of single-season and career saves records can be found on page 4 of the PDF version of this release.
• Falcon goalkeepers have combined to post double-digit save totals in nine of the last 15 matches, dating to last season. BGSU had 10 or more saves in each of the last three 2012 games, and Cadel has had totals of 12 stops vs. both Butler and Eastern Michigan, along with 10 saves against IUPUI, Evansville and Northern Illinois this fall. The Falcons had 11 total saves vs. Western Michigan, with Cadel making four saves and freshman Michelle Denley six (BG was credited with a 'team save' in that game).
• Friday's shutout of Northern Illinois was the Falcons' first in over a year, since BGSU battled Kent State to a scoreless, double-overtime draw at Cochrane Field on Sept. 23, 2012. That KSU match also was the last time the Brown and Orange had earned a point in a MAC match prior to the NIU contest.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
Buffalo has an overall record of 4-7-2, and the Bulls are 1-5-0 in MAC action heading into Friday's match vs. BGSU. UB dropped a pair of 1-0 matches at home last weekend, falling to Kent State Friday (Oct. 11) and Ohio two days later. The Bulls are 2-5-2 at UB Stadium and 2-2-0 on the road this season. Individually, Karen McMahon leads the team with three goals and seven points on the year. She is the only player on the team with more than one goal or two points. Ainsley Wheldon has played every second of every match in goal, and has 55 saves, four shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.86. Head coach Michael Thomas welcomed back a total of 13 players who appeared in 10 or more games a year ago. The 2012 edition of the Bulls went 5-12-2 overall and 3-7-1 in MAC play.
A LOOK AT THE ZIPS
Akron has an overall mark of 4-7-3, and the Zips are 1-4-1 in the MAC heading into Friday night's (Oct. 18) home match vs. Central Michigan. Last weekend, Zips battled Ohio to a 2-2 draw before falling at Kent State by a 2-0 score. Akron is 1-3-1 at home, 2-4-2 on the road and 1-0-0 in neutral-site contests in 2013. Lani Smith paces the Zips with six goals and 14 points, while Sarah Sivic has 12 points on four goals and a UA-leading four assists. Klaire Adee has played roughly two-thirds of the minutes in goal this season, and has 33 saves and a GAA of 1.58. Alex Luevano-Harden has 24 stops and a 1.90 GAA. Head coach Vernon Croft returned 22 letterwinners, including nine starters, from a 2012 team that finished 6-11-1 overall and 2-8-1 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Buffalo, 11-5-1, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Bulls won last year's meeting. UB posted a 2-1, come-from-behind win over the Brown and Orange at Cochrane Field (Oct. 12, 2012), with Madeline Wideman scoring the Falcons' goal. That UB win broke a four-match series winning streak for the Brown and Orange, including a 2-1, come-from-behind victory in Western New York two years ago (Sept. 23, 2011). Wideman had a goal and an assist vs. the Bulls in a 4-0 BG win in Northwest Ohio her freshman year (Sept. 24, 2010). The Falcons are 7-4-0 at home, 3-1-1 on the road and 1-0-0 in neutral-site matches vs. UB.
BGSU leads Akron, 7-4-1, in that series, but the Zips are riding a four-match unbeaten streak vs. the Falcons. A year ago at a rainy Cochrane Field, BGSU outshot the Zips by a 20-6 count, but UA got a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win (Oct. 14, 2012). The Zips scored late in the teams' last meeting in Akron, downing BG by a 1-0 count two years ago (Oct. 14, 2011). The Brown and Orange won the first five series meetings, but the Zips are 4-2-1 in the last seven games. BGSU is 4-2-1 in home matches and 3-2-0 in away games in the series with Akron.
Series information and match-by-match results for all of BGSU's opponents can be found on pages 40-42 of the BGSU Women's Soccer Media Guide, which is available here on the web at BGSUFalcons.com.
