ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 0-13-1 on the season, and BGSU is 0-7-1 in Mid-American Conference play. Seven of BG's losses this fall, including both of last weekend's setbacks, have been by a single goal. Last weekend, the Brown and Orange dropped a 1-0 decision at Buffalo on Friday night (Oct. 18), then fell at Akron by a 2-1 final on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 20).
Head coach Lindsay Basalyga and her staff returned 11 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a year ago. The 2012 club finished with an overall record of 1-17-1 and a MAC mark of 0-10-1. Ten of the Falcons' losses last fall, including six in league play, came by a single goal.
Six of BGSU's first eight matches this year came on the road. BG's first three home matches all were 2-1 setbacks, including overtime games vs. Butler (Aug. 31) and Evansville (Sept. 22). The Falcons dropped a 2-1 decision in regulation vs. Eastern Michigan (Oct. 4), and BG has also faced Western Michigan (Oct. 6), NIU and UT at home this fall to date.
Senior Madeline Wideman leads the Falcons in scoring, with nine points on the season. Wideman has three goals this fall, while fellow senior Kaitlyn Tobin has two. Tobin is second on the team with four points this year, with her goals coming against Michigan State and Ohio. Wideman scored the Falcons' goal at Akron on Sunday, and she also had goals in the Evansville and Kent State matches.
Junior Ashley Garr and freshmen Taylor Bucaro and Haley Malaczewski each have one goal on the season. Malaczewski came off the bench to score her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate match, at Cleveland State. Garr scored the first goal of her BGSU career vs. Butler, and Bucaro scored on a blast from distance in the Eastern Michigan match.
Wideman leads the Falcons with three assists on the year, while classmates Alyssa Carmack and Ivi Casagrande and junior Sidney Huth each have one assist apiece this fall.
Wideman has been involved in the scoring of six of the Falcons' eight goals this year, including five-straight BG goals during one stretch.
In goal, redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel has started all 14 matches. She has a total of 109 saves, a saves percentage of .796 and a goals-against average of 2.14. True freshman Michelle Denley has seen action in a pair of games in relief, both in MAC play, and has played just under 113 minutes this fall.
BGSU's list of returning starters includes the team's two 2013 co-captains, Carmack and Jenny Fowler. Carmack was one of just two players to start all 19 matches last fall, playing at a center-back position. Fowler, a fifth-year Falcon, made 17 starts in 2012.
Other returning letterwinners include seniors Casagrande, Tobin and Wideman, redshirt junior Kylie Briem, true juniors Garr, Huth and Kaylee Draper and sophomores Emma Norris and Haley Parkinson. Huth led the Brown and Orange in scoring with three goals and seven points a year ago, while Wideman had a pair of goals and five total points in '12.
Cadel, the lone returnee among the goalkeepers, is in her first playing season with the Falcons, having sat out the 2012 season as a redshirt. The goalkeeping corps also includes true freshmen Denley and Jenna DiTusa.
Cadel is one of three Falcons on the current roster who did not see action last fall. Fourth-year Falcon Kailey Paszko and redshirt freshman Lexie Schmidt both missed the 2012 campaign due to injury.
Denley and DiTusa are two of the nine true freshmen on the roster. That list also includes Bucaro, Malaczewski, Paige Amodio, Sabrina Cisneros, Jessica Creech, Taylor Dackin and Melissa Needham.
Amodio, Cadel, Carmack and Wideman each have started all 14 matches this fall, while Fowler and Garr have made 13 starts each. Carmack has played all 1289-plus minutes for the Falcons this season. Amodio has been on the field for 1183 minutes, while Cadel (1176), Garr (1126) and Wideman (1122) each have played more than 1100 minutes this fall to date.
CADEL, FALCONS AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Cadel leads the MAC, and ranks among the top 10 in the nation, in several statistical categories. Cadel has 109 saves in 14 contests, an average of 7.79 per game. She ranks first in the MAC in both total saves and saves per game. Cadel is sixth in the nation in saves, and eighth in the country in saves per game. She ranks second among freshman nationally in both categories.
As a team, BGSU is fifth in the country in saves per game.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• Redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel is putting together a solid season in goal. She currently has a total of 109 saves, nearly 30 more than any other 'keeper in the MAC, and her saves percentage stands at .796. If the season ended today, Cadel's saves pct. would rank sixth on the BGSU single-season list.
• Cadel is in her first playing season with the Falcons, but her total of 109 saves already ranks her fifth on the BGSU career list. Becca Ison, a senior on last year's team, is fourth on that list after ending her BG tenure with 143 saves. Each of the top-three players on the list – Erika Flanders, Alexa Arsenault and Ali Shingler – made over 330 saves in their respective careers.
• Cadel has moved into a tie for seventh place on the BGSU single-season saves list. Flanders holds the school record with 137 total saves in the 2002 season. The complete list of single-season saves records can be found in the PDF version of this release.
• Falcon goalkeepers have combined to post double-digit save totals in 10 of the last 17 matches, dating to last season. BGSU 'keepers had 10 or more saves in each of the last three 2012 games, and Cadel has had totals of 12 stops vs. both Butler and Eastern Michigan, along with 11 saves at Buffalo and 10 saves against IUPUI, Evansville and Northern Illinois this fall. The Falcons had 11 total saves vs. Western Michigan, with Cadel making four stops and freshman Michelle Denley six (BG was credited with a 'team save' in that game).
• Cadel had a total of 11 saves at Buffalo on Friday night, including 10 in the first half. The Newmarket, Ontario, native had eight saves in the first 24 minutes alone.
• Senior Madeline Wideman's goal at Akron gives her team-leading totals of three goals and nine points this fall. She also paces the Brown and Orange with three assists in 2013. In her BGSU career, Wideman has 28 points on eight goals and 12 assists, leading all active Falcons in each of those three career categories as well.
• Wideman tied her career high with five shot attempts in Sunday's Akron match.
• Akron's tying goal on Sunday came via a penalty kick. Opponents have been awarded four PKs this season to date, scoring on all of them. BGSU has not been awarded a PK since the final game of the 2010 season, a home match vs. Miami (Oct. 28, 2010). Katie Stephenson scored on that PK in her final match as a Falcon.
• In the Akron game, the Falcons had more corner kicks than the opponent for just the second time this season. BGSU had a 4-2 margin on Sunday. BGSU had seven corner kicks to Kent State's four in another 2013 game in Northeast Ohio.
• Akron's totals of 15 shot attempts and six on goal were the fewest allowed by the Falcons this year. BG was outshot by eight (15-7) in the UA game, the smallest margin in a 2013 match. Cleveland State also had eight more shots than the Falcons (18-10) in the season opener.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Ball State has an overall record of 9-4-3, and the Cardinals are 4-2-2 in MAC action after playing to a pair of 2-2, double-overtime draws against Toledo and Northern Illinois. BSU has records of 5-1-2 at home and 4-3-1 on the road this season to date. Individually, Michelle Blok leads the team with 10 points. Blok and Kelsey Wendlandt each have four goals this fall, and Cailey Starck has a team-best five assists. In goal, Layne Schramm and Brooke Dennis each have made eight starts. Schramm has 34 saves, four shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.58, while Dennis has 41 stops, three clean sheets and a GAA of 0.95. Head coach Craig Roberts welcomed back 12 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's club. The 2012 edition of the Cardinals went 8-7-5 overall and 5-3-3 in MAC play.
A LOOK AT THE REDHAWKS
Miami has an overall mark of 8-6-2, and the RedHawks are 5-1-2 in the MAC heading into Friday's (Oct. 25) home match vs. Central Michigan. Miami is unbeaten in the last seven games, and the MU defense has posted five-straight shutouts, including in back-to-back 2-0 wins over NIU and UT last weekend. The 'Hawks are 4-3-1 both at home and on the road this fall. Kelsey Dinges leads a potent attack with 17 points, including six goals. Kayla Zakrzewski has 16 points, on five goals and a team-leading six assists, while Katy Dolesh has six goals and 14 points. Allison Norenberg has eight of the team's nine shutouts in goal, and she also has 47 saves and a GAA of 1.14. Head coach Bobby Kramig's team went 20-3-1 overall and 10-0-1 in the MAC last fall, winning a match in the NCAA Championships. Fourteen letterwinners, including 10 starters, returned from that team.
THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Ball State, 9-3-3, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Cardinals have won the last two meetings. BSU captured a 2-0 decision in the last matchup at Cochrane Field (Oct. 2, 2011), and the Cards scored in the final minute of the second overtime for a 1-0 win in Muncie last year (Oct. 19, 2012). Five of the teams' last seven meetings have gone to double-overtime. The Falcons are 2-4-0 in home games and 1-5-3 in road contests vs. the Cardinals over the years.
BGSU trails Miami, 11-7-1, in that series, and the RedHawks are unbeaten in the last four meetings. MU won a 3-1 decision in Oxford last fall (Oct. 21, 2012). The teams have not played in BG in three years, since a 5-2 RedHawk win on the final day of the 2010 regular season (Oct. 28, 2010). Miami won the first eight series meetings, and BGSU then won seven-straight games over the RedHawks, prior to the current MU four-match unbeaten streak. BGSU is 4-4-0 in home matches, 3-6-1 in road contests and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches vs. Miami.
Series information and match-by-match results for all of BGSU's opponents can be found on pages 40-42 of the BGSU Women's Soccer Media Guide, which is available on the web here at BGSUFalcons.com. Series information for this weekend's #MACtion can be found in the PDF version of these notes.
THE 2013 CAPTAINS
