December 18, 2013 | Men's Soccer
BGSU has a total of seven players honored
Three Bowling Green State University men's soccer student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference First Team, the league office has announced. Falcon seniors Ryan Comiskey, Brandon Silva and Michael Wiest all have earned the honor, the league office announced Wednesday (Dec. 18).
Additionally, four other Falcons earned honorable mention. That quartet included senior Anthony Grant, sophomores Jake Genrich and Ryan James and redshirt freshman Max Auden.
BGSU's total of three first-team honorees tied for the most among any MAC school. The Falcons' seven total players honored also tied for most in the conference.
Comiskey, a native of Grantville, Pa. (Northern Lebanon HS), earned All-MAC Second-Team honors on the pitch in 2013 after leading the Falcons in scoring, with totals of six goals and 13 points. He tied for fourth in the MAC in goals. Comiskey ended his career with a bang, scoring a total of four goals as BG posted a win and a tie in the final week of the season. The senior had the first two-goal game of his career in an 8-0 win over IPFW on Nov. 5. Then, he again scored twice in the Falcons' MAC match at West Virginia three days later. Comiskey finished his career with totals of 12 goals, four assists and 28 points in 67 matches.
In the classroom, Comiskey currently maintains a 3.70 cumulative grade-point average as an early childhood education major.
Silva, a native of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne HS), was an All-MAC Second-Team honoree, and has earned a veritable plethora of academic honors. Recently, he became the first men's soccer player in four years to be named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA, earning Capital One Academic All-America Second-Team recognition. He was named to the Academic All-District First Team as well. A team tri-captain for the third consecutive year, Silva was one of three Falcons to start all 19 matches, and he amassed six points on two goals and a pair of assists. In his career, Silva played a total of 74 career games at BG, starting all 74. He missed just one career match (due to injury in 2011), and had 17 points on six goals and five assists in his Falcon tenure.
Currently, Silva is wrapping up his first semester in graduate school at BGSU as a kinesiology major. He graduated from the University in May of 2013, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a minor in Spanish. Silva had a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA during his undergraduate career.Â
Wiest, a native of Naperville, Ill. (North HS), joined Comiskey and Silva on the All-MAC Second Team in 2013. He played every second of every match for the second consecutive year, and recorded eight shutouts, the highest total by a BGSU goalkeeper since 1998. Wiest also had 75 saves, a goals-against average of just 0.82 and a saves percentage of .815. He led the MAC in saves pct., and tied for the league lead in shutouts. Wiest finished his career with 21 shutouts, and became the first Falcon 'keeper with at least six shutouts in three-straight seasons since the late 1990s. He finished with career totals of 20 wins and 218 saves along with a GAA of 0.98 and a saves pct. of .804.
In the classroom, Wiest is a physical education teacher education major with a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
Auden, who hails from Naperville, Ill. (North HS), played in 16 of the Falcons' 19 matches, making 14 starts, in his first playing season. After not seeing action in three of the first four games of the year, he played in each of the last 15. Auden was in the starting lineup for all but one of those games, playing at an outside defender position. He had one assist on the year, coming in his collegiate debut, and he played 90 or more minutes in 10 matches.
In the classroom, Auden has a 3.79 cumulative GPA in business administrationÂ
Â
Genrich, a native of Plymouth, Mich. (Salem HS), played in all 19 matches, making 18 starts at a center-back position. His total of 1738 minutes played ranked him fifth on the team, and he helped the Falcons post eight shutouts, the team's highest total since 1998. The Brown and Orange allowed just 0.89 goals per game. Genrich has played in all 39 of BGSU's matches during his career, starting 38.
In the classroom, Genrich is a business administration major with a cumulative GPA of 3.61.
Grant, a native of Kingston, Jamaica (Jamaica College), finished second on the Falcons in goals, assists and points in 2013. His 11 total points included three goals and four assists. Grant led the team with 66 total shots and 31 shots on goal, and tied for the BG lead with two game-winning goals. He scored a Golden Goal in BG's overtime win over Northern Illinois, and also had the winner in the Falcons' season opener, vs. Malone. Grant scored four points, matching the highest total of his BG career, in the win over IPFW. In two seasons with the Falcons, Grant had 31 points in 39 matches. He had 12 goals and seven assists at BGSU, and seven of his goals were game winners.
Grant, a geography major, currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.59 at the University.
James, a native of Mississauga, Ontario (Loyola Catholic Secondary), played in all 19 matches, making 16 starts, in 2013. He had a total of four points on a goal and a pair of assists. James found the back of the net in the Falcons' season-opening win over Malone, and he had assists in BG's 1-1 draw vs. Michigan and in the win over IPFW. Through two seasons with the Brown and Orange, James has career totals of 14 points on five goals and four assists.
In the classroom, James has a cumulative GPA of 3.59 as an exercise science major.
The Academic All-MAC Team is the result of voting by the faculty athletics representatives at conference institutions. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and have participated in 50 percent or more of the team's contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
