The Bowling Green State University women's golf team fired its second straight round of 303, to finish fifth among the 17 teams competing in the Rio Verde Intercollegiate, hosted by Western Michigan University on White Wing Golf Course in Rio Verde, Ariz.
This was the 11th consecutive year of the Rio Verde, with the Falcons competing in the tournament on eight different occasions. BGSU's sixth-place finish this year, smashed their previous-best when they finished 14th in 2007-08. In seven previous Rio Verde Intercollegiate tournaments, BGSU finished 14th, 16th, 17th (three times), 18th and 20th.
Not only was their finish impressive, the 606 (303-303) team score destroyed their previous low for 36 holes at the Rio Verde. BGSU averaged 659.0 for 36 holes from 2004-2011 in the tournament.
Only two teams carded a better final round than the Falcons. Even Northern Arizona, who won the tournament, shot 309 on Sunday afternoon. Only Xavier (296) and Arkansas-Little Rock (296) went lower than the Orange and Brown. Those same two teams finished second (600) and third (601) in the field.
Among Mid-American Conference school, BGSU fell just below Eastern Michigan (601) and finished ahead of Toledo (607), Western Michigan (609), Ball State (612), Northern Illinois (618), Ohio (635) and Akron (637). Kent State was the only MAC school not represented over the weekend.
BGSU was once again led by sophomore Shelby Wilson, who followed up her 72 from Saturday with a three-over 75, to finish in a tie for fifth among 90 golfers. Her final total of 147 is the fourth-lowest 36-hole score in BGSU history and is a new career-best for Wilson. Her previous low was a 151 at the Butler Fall Invite.
Speaking of career-bests, Patricia Holt matched her career-low with a score of 151. The sophomore opened with a 75 and carded a 76 in the final 18 holes to finish tied for 17th.
A third Falcons added a new record to her scorecard. Senior Amy Ruthenberg carded a 75 on Sunday afternoon, matching her career-low, set at the Cleveland State Invitational during the fall season. Ruthenberg would finish tied for 21st. Here 36-hole score of 152 was also a career-best, one better than her 153 at the Butler Fall Invite.
Freshman Hannah Lewis and Lilly Bartell each carded 77's in the final round, meaning the Falcons as a team were able to discard a 77 from its team score. Lewis finished tied for 43rd (79-77) and Bartell was tied for 53rd (80-77).
BGSU will have some time to reflect on their trip out West, not returning to action until April 5-6 at the Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky.
