Anna Starr Commits To BGSU Volleyball
March 15, 2013 | Volleyball
“We are excited to announce the addition of Anna Starr to our 2013 roster,” Tomic said. “Anna comes from a great family and is an outstanding student and a talented setter. We want our setters to be the hardest working players on the team and Anna has that kind of work ethic and attitude.”
Starr, at 5-foot-8, was a first team all-conference player in 2012, leading Lakota East to a district championship. She handed out 738 assists and had 165 digs to earn third team all-city honors. As a junior, Starr posted 526 assists and was named second team all-conference after guiding the team to a Greater Miami Conference (GMC) championship.
A National Honor Society member, Starr is also excellent in the classroom, earning the GMC Volleyball Academic Award three times. She received the High Honors Award for a 4.0 grade point average every year since 2009 and was Summa Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam in 2012 after being Maxima Cum Laude in 2011. She also received the Teachers' Academy Department Award and was the October Junior Optimist Teenager of the Month in 2011.
Starr has played club volleyball for Sports Express, McGee's Volleyball Academy and the Cincinnati Volleyball Academy. She plans to study middle childhood education at BGSU.
Starr will also join high school and club teammate Madeline Garda at BGSU. Garda, a 5-foot-4 libero, signed a National Letter of Intent in November to play with the Falcons. Along with those two, Tomic has also announced the additions of Desi Klaer, a 6-5 middle/outside hitter from Fort Collins, Colo., Alyssa Maloney, a 6-0 middle blocker from Homer Glen, Ill., Carlyn Stella, a 5-11 outside hitter from Montgomery, Texas, Delaney Arkeilpane, a 5-8 defensive specialist from Orlando, Fla., Amanda Schiavo, a 5-7 defensive specialist from Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jelena Sunjic, a 6-3 hitter from Metkovic, Croatia.
The Bowling Green volleyball program returns five starters plus the libero from a team that went 22-11 in Tomic's first year at BGSU. The Falcons finished second in the Mid-American Conference during the regular season and then won the MAC Tournament. Bowling Green defeated Yale in five sets in the opening round for the program's first NCAA Tournament victory ever.
