Pleger threw the hammer 212-feet-6 to break the meet and facility record in North Carolina. Her distance ranks third in the country currently and has only been bettered in the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship one time in history. The previous school record of 191-7 was set by Whitney Hartman in 2008 and the Raleigh Relays meet record had stood since 1999.
On top of Pleger's fantastic mark, the 4x200 relay team of Jeanette Pettigrew, Taylor Rambo, Brittany Sinclair and Allison Weimer set a new school record with a time of 1:37.80. The old record of 1:38.95 was set in 1995 by Julie Shade, Andrea Lindsley, Clarice Gregory and Kaleitha Johnson.
“It was our goal to open our season well the first two meets and there is no doubt that we have done that,” BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. “We are so proud of Brooke and the 4x200 squad. It was great to see the improvements this weekend across all of the event groups. Now, we have to take advantage of our training and racing opportunities in the month of April as we prepare for the MAC Championships.”
Along with those record-breaking performances, all three competitors in the 400 hurdles set new personal bests. Demetra Taylor ran a 1:02.84 and was followed closely behind by Sinclair with a time of 1:02.89. Natalie Sommerville added a 1:03.11. All three were less than a second shy of the MAC Automatic Qualifying mark of 1:02.17.
Bowling Green will be back in action in a week, competing at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational Friday and Saturday before hosting Toledo in the only home competition of the year on April 11.
