April 06, 2013 | Women's Track and Field
Akron, Ohio – Allison Weimer won the 400 with a career-best time and Jeanette Pettigrew reached MAC automatic qualifying marks in the 100 and the 200 at the Northeast Ohio Invitational Saturday, hosted by Akron.
“We saw nice improvement today in several areas,” BGSU Head Coach Lou Snelling said. “Now we will get focused on representing well at home this week.”
Weimer, a senior, ran the 400 in 56.25 to beat 13 other competitors at the meet. She edged out teammate Taylor Rambo, who placed second in 56.83 seconds. Weimer improved upon her season-best 56.99 seconds and personal best 56.50, which she ran in the MAC Championships a year ago to finish 11th. Rambo, just a freshman, ran the 400 for the first time in her collegiate career and junior Brittany Sinclair placed fourth in 57.42.
Pettigrew edged forward in both the 100 and 200, running the shorter race in 11.93 seconds, just quicker than the automatic qualifying mark for the MAC Championship of 11.95 seconds. She was .07 faster than a week ago.
In the 200, Pettigrew's time of 24.37 was .08 faster than the MAC Automatic Qualifying mark of 24.45 and better than her previous career best of 24.82. She finished fourth in both events, while Weimer placed fifth in the 200 with a personal best 24.72 seconds.
In the discus, freshman Kayla Velasquez continues to show improvement. After throwing the discus 122-feet-1 to open the season, she pushed her collegiate best to 138-0 a week ago. Saturday, Velasquez threw it 142-11 to place sixth.
Bowling Green will be at home for the only time this year when the Falcons host Toledo in a dual meet Thursday beginning at 2 p.m.
