Comeback Falls Short, Falcons Finish Second at Mount St. Mary’s

The Bowling Green State University men's golf fell three shots short of a comeback, finishing second of 11 teams at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Tuesday.
BGSU entered the final round six shots behind Binghamton, a team that fired 302 in the final round. The Falcons shot 299, the best Tuesday round of all 11 teams, but were three shots shy of their first tournament victory of the year.
Binghamton won the two-day event with an 877, followed by BGSU (880), Rounding out the top five were Iona (891), Mount St. Mary's (910) and Fairfield (917). No schools from the Mid-American Conference competed in the event.
Wes Gates won his third tournament of the season, besting the field by three shots. The senior recorded a 213 (67-71-75). Gates is the first Falcon in school history to win three events in a single season and is now tied with Matt Schneider for most tournament wins in a career at BGSU.
Gates' nearest competition was from teammate Joe Cooper, who finished second with a 216. After opening with a pair of 73's on Monday, Cooper closed with a career-best 70, to recorded a career-best 54-hole score as well.
Josh Bialecki was 11th with a 225 (76-74-75), followed by Ryan Triller's 227 (75-73-79, T-16th) and Charlie Olson's 233 (75-77-81, T-29th).
Competing as individuals were Holden Pahr (72-75-78--225, T-11th) and Torey Brummett (82-74-83--239, 42nd).
Up next for the Orange and Brown is a trip to the Rutherford Intercollegiate on April 20-21.
