The Bowling Green State University baseball team will play host to Northern Kentucky University on Tuesday afternoon, kicking off a four-game home stand to end the 2013 regular season. The Falcons are currently 18-26, rebounding nicely from a 4-15 start to go 14-11 over the last 25 games. The Norse have struggled in their transition to the Division One level, going just 8-43 so far in 2013.
Northern Kentucky is coached by Todd Asalon. The Norse have a road record of just 3-26 on the season, with Tuesday's matchup marking their 30th road game of the season. As a team, NKU bats .224 with a team ERA of 5.69. Senior infielder Brad Clement leads the Norse with a batting average of .307. Clement, a native of Brunswick, Ohio, is the only regular to hold a batting average of over .300.
The Falcons, on the other hand, are batting .272 as a team with an ERA of 3.87. T.J. Losby leads the Orange and Brown with a .358 batting average.
Over the weekend, the Falcons were able to take two-out-of-three from Ohio University on the road, rebounding from a game one loss to take the final two games of the series. In the first game of the weekend, the Falcons were unable to pull out a victory in extra innings, surrendering a walk off single in the bottom of the tenth inning for the 4-3 defeat. In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, redshirt junior Mike Frank pitched all ten innings, as the Falcons outscored the Bobcats 5-0 in the tenth for the 7-2, extra-innings win. Frank's ten-inning performance marked the first time since 2003 that a Falcon pitcher had lasted more than nine innings in a single game. In Sunday, the Falcons' bats stayed scorching hot, rolling past Ohio for the 16-2 victory.
With their 12th Mid-American Conference win on Sunday, the Falcons have won their most conference games since winning 19 in 2010. Sunday's win also marked the fifth time that the Falcons have won a MAC series this season. In 2012, the Falcons won just three MAC series'.
Tuesday's pitching matchup will see LHP Brett Fitzwater opposed by RHP Drew Campbell. Fitzwater, a freshman for the Orange and Brown, has compiled a 2-2 record on the season. Tuesday's game will be his sixth start of his freshman campaign. Campbell has started just one game this season. He has an 0-1 record with a 5.16 ERA.
Following Tuesday's matchup, the Falcons will play host to Buffalo for the final Mid-American Conference series of 2013. Buffalo currently sits in first place by one-half game in the MAC standings. The weekend series will begin on Thursday at 3 p.m., with Friday and Saturday's contests beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day, with those activities beginning about 15 minutes before first pitch.
