NCAA East Regional Declared Athletes
Indianapolis, Ind. – Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore Brooke Pleger will be the No. 2 seed for the hammer throw at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional, as announced today. The East regional will take place in Greensboro, N.C. from May 23-25.
With a career-best throw of 66.99 meters, Pleger ranks behind only Princeton's Julia Ratcliffe, at 68.80 meters, in the region. She is just ahead of Akron's Brittany Funk, who Pleger edged out to win the Mid-American Conference Championship in the event last week. Ohio State's Alexis Thomas is fourth and Connecticut's Victoria Flowers ranks fifth.
At the regional, 48 hammer throwers will compete for the regional crown. The top 12 finishers will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Eugene, Ore. June 5-8. Pleger's chances of advancing to the national championship appear to be solid as her worst throw of the year, 64.76 meters at the Raleigh Relays, has only been bettered by four other athletes in the region.
Pleger, Funk and Central Michigan's Devene Brown (fifth in the discus) are the only student-athletes from the MAC ranked in the top five in the region in any event. Pleger was named the conference's Most Outstanding Field Athlete for the year after breaking the MAC Championship meet record in the hammer throw. She is looking to become the first Falcon to advance to the outdoor national championship since Kerri McClung in 2005. Stephanie Heldt is the last Falcon to earn All-American status, doing so in 1999.
