Bruns Named National Pitcher Of The Week
May 27, 2013 | Baseball
TUSCON, Ariz. - Bowling Green State University's Nick Bruns was named Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Pitcher of the Week today. Bruns, a senior from Saint Henry, Ohio, compiled a 2-0 record with a save in last week's Mid-American Conference Tournament. The MAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player pitched 12.1 innings without allowing a run. He struck out eight while only allowing five hits.
Bruns made his first appearance of the tournament in Wednesday's (May 22) game vs. No. 3 seed Northern Illinois. In that game, the senior closer pitched 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out two, and earned the win when the Falcons were able to scratch two runs across in the top of the 11th inning. His second appearance of the tournament came in a Saturday (May 25) elimination game. Bruns was able to earn the save, finishing off the 1-0 win over Toledo with two strikeouts to advance the Falcons to the MAC Championship game. In Sunday's championship game, the senior turned in a gutsy performance. Making just his second start of the season, Bruns took the hill in a winner-take-all championship game against Ball State. Facing Scott Baker, the Mid-American Conference's Pitcher of the Year, Bruns was able to throw a complete-game shutout for the victory. Bruns was efficient throughout, throwing just 91 pitches and allowing just four hits.
Bruns is the first player to earn National Player/Pitcher of the Week honors this season. Because of his efforts during the MAC Tournament, the Falcons will return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. The Falcons will begin their tournament run in the Louisville Regional, facing host-school Louisville on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
