Rodnei Santos Named Volleyball Assistant Coach

Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Danijela Tomic has announced that Rodnei Santos has been hired as an assistant coach to fill out her staff for 2013. Santos comes to BGSU after serving two years as a volunteer assistant coach at Mid-American Conference opponent Central Michigan.
"I am very excited to announce that Rodnei Santos will be joining my coaching staff," Tomic, beginning her second season at BGSU, said. "Rodnei is the perfect fit for our program because of his character and volleyball background."
Santos oversaw the development of the middle blockers and right side hitters at Central Michigan and helped the program to a MAC Tournament Championship in 2011, the first in the program's history. Under his tutelage, CMU led the MAC in kills in 2012 and tied for second in blocks in 2011.
At Central Michigan, Santos also served as a recruiting and travel technician, was the video exchange coordinator and did database management.
"I am extremely excited and grateful to be joining the Bowling Green Athletics Department," Santos said. "I want to thank Head Coach Danijela Tomic and the administration for giving me this opportunity. During my visit to BGSU it was clear that this is a special place filled with a passionate and committed group of people. I look forward to joining that group and helping Coach Tomic continue to build BGSU into a national power."
Santos has also served as a lead coach for Gold Medal Squared, the premier provider of volleyball camps and volleyball clinics designed to improve the quality of volleyball players and coaches. He has worked as head coach of 16's regional team and 15's national team for CT Impact Volleyball Club and was a junior varsity coach at John Jay High School.
A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Santos came to the United States to play volleyball at the collegiate level, spending a year at Brigham Young before transferring to Pepperdine. He was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) All-Academic Team three times and ranked fourth in the country in blocks as a junior, finishing ninth all-time at Pepperdine in career blocks. He earned the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar first team honor twice.
"Rodnei's familiarity with the MAC, playing experience at the highest levels in Brazil and at BYU and Pepperdine, coaching and mentoring under some of the best coaching minds in the country and years of coaching camps for Gold Medal Squared separated him from the rest of our candidates," Tomic said. "He is a very motivated, enthusiastic and hard-working young coach and I look forward to having him be a part of BGSU and the Bowling Green community."
Santos will join a program that went 22-11 a year ago, including 13-3 in MAC play. The Falcons won the MAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. BGSU returns five starters and the libero from that squad and will be one of the preseason favorites in the MAC.
