Kelly Mahoney headed home a corner kick in the 99th minute of the match, giving Butler University a 2-1, overtime victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon (Aug. 31). The non-conference match was held at Cochrane Field.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 0-2 on the year.

Junior Ashley Garr scored the Falcons' goal, also heading a corner kick into the net. Garr's goal early in the second half gave the Brown and Orange the lead, but BU's Sophia Maccagnone tied the match on a free kick 12 minutes later.

The Bulldogs had a whopping 37-7 advantage in total shot attempts, and BU had 15 shots on goal to the Falcons' five. But, the teams battled through a scoreless first half before the home team broke on top early in the second period.

In the first minute of that second half, Falcon senior Madeline Wideman made a run into the penalty box, winning a corner kick for the Falcons. Wideman took that corner kick from the left side, and played the ball into the center of the 18-yard box. Garr, arguably the shortest player on the field, rose up and hit a thunderous header to give the home team a 1-0 lead with just 67 seconds gone in the half. Wideman drew the lone assist.

The Bulldogs tied the score just shy of the hour mark. The Falcons were whistled for a foul just outside the penalty box. Maccagnone took the ensuing free kick, and put her shot past redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Cadel and into the net. That goal came with 59:36 gone.

Neither team would score over the remainder of regulation, despite numerous chances. The Bulldogs had no fewer than 19 second-half shots, including six shots on goal over the final 30 minutes. At the other end of the pitch, Falcon freshman Taylor Bucaro's long shot beat BU 'keeper Julie Burton, but rang off of the top right corner of the goal, where the post meets the crossbar. That shot was the first of Bucaro's collegiate career.

With 18 minutes left in regulation, Cadel came off her line to smother a shot by Katie Griswold, who tried to poke it past the Falcon 'keeper with the Bulldogs on the counterattack. The visitors had three more shot attempts over the next few minutes, including an effort by Maccagnone that whizzed just wide of the frame.

But, with under six minutes on the clock, sophomore Emma Norris nearly gave the Falcons the lead. A BU defender knocked the ball away from Wideman in the box, and it came out to Norris. She fired a long shot that was headed toward the upper half of the goal. It was all Burton could do to scramble back and tip the ball over the crossbar at the last possible second.

With just 3:30 to go, BU's Mary Allen was pulled down as she approached the penalty area. But, Maccagnone's free kick from roughly 25 yards out sailed well over the goal. Not much more than a minute remained when BU's Elise Kotsakis got a shot off, but it was blocked out of play for a corner kick, and the Falcons successfully dealt with that corner.

Butler had a 6-0 advantage in shots in the overtime period. Cadel saved a shot by Ali Backscheider in the opening minute of the OT, but the Bulldogs got the ball right back. After Kotsakis took a return pass from Maccagnone, the ball was knocked away from her by a BG defender in the penalty area. Somehow, the ball wound up back on the boot of Kotsakis seconds later, and the junior rifled a low shot square off of the right post.

Cadel saved a shot by Serina Kashimoto before the period was two minutes old, and two more BU shots were off the mark over the next 90 seconds. The Bulldogs' 37th shot of the day, however, would prove to be the winner.

Butler was awarded a corner kick, and Stephanie Kaylor took that kick from the northeast corner of the pitch, near the Cochrane Field scoreboard. Kaylor's kick found the head of Mahoney, who made no mistake, putting her shot on target and into the back of the net for a 'Golden Goal' and a BU win.

Maccagnone led the Bulldogs' shot parade, with an eye-popping 11 total attempts. She put a game-high three shots on goal. Kotsakis had six shot attempts, McKenzie Muchow five and Mahoney four for the visitors. Garr and freshman Courtney Hendrix led the Falcons with two shots apiece.

BU had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks, including a 6-0 margin in the first half and the lone corner of the overtime period.

Burton picked up the win in goal, making four saves in her complete-match effort. Cadel had 12 saves, by far the most of her brief BGSU playing career. The Falcons were credited with a 'team save' as well, as senior co-captain Alyssa Carmack blocked a BU shot on the goal line in the game's early going.

The Falcons had had the first shot of the match, off of the boot of Garr with four minutes gone. A BU giveaway led to senior Ivi Casagrande playing the ball ahead to Haley Malaczewski. As Malaczewski headed across the 18-yard line, a defender poked the ball away from the freshman. The ball came out to Garr, who hit a long shot that sailed high of the target.

Two minutes later, Kotsakis took a cross from Muchow on the doorstep, near the right post. She hit a shot toward net that Carmack was able to block, and the Falcons cleared the ball out of danger.

With just over nine minutes gone, Maccagnone's long shot hit the crossbar, the first of the three shots -- two by Butler, one by BG's Bucaro -- that would hit the woodwork during the match.

The Bulldogs had three corner kicks in the span of just 58 seconds late in the first half. Mahoney headed the second of those kicks toward goal, but it was deflected over the bar by a BG defender. The third corner kick in that sequence sailed behind the goal.

Maccagnone had the final shot of the half, coming with two and a half minutes to go, but it was off the mark, and the teams headed to the intermission locked in a scoreless standoff, before Garr began the scoring early in the second period.

The Falcons now take to the road for the next three matches, beginning Sunday, Sept. 8. On that date, the Brown and Orange will play an Indianapolis-based school for the second consecutive game, facing IUPUI. After trips to Michigan State (Sept. 13) and Detroit (Sept. 17), BGSU will return home to meet Evansville on Sunday, Sept. 22, in the final match of the non-conference schedule.

* Junior Ashley Garr's goal on Saturday was the first of her collegiate career.

* Senior Madeline Wideman picked up the assist on that goal ... Wideman now has 10 assists and 20 points in her BGSU career, leading all active Falcons in both categories.

* Freshman Taylor Bucaro made her collegiate debut on Sunday ... Bucaro played 12 minutes, and hit the crossbar (actually, the corner of the goal where the bar meets the goalpost) on her first shot attempt.

* Redshirt junior Kylie Briem made her 2013 debut ... Briem, who saw 38 minutes of action, was making her first appearance since suffering an injury in last season's Akron match (Oct. 14, 2012) and missing the remainder of the season.

* Redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel made 12 saves in Saturday's match ... Cadel, playing in her second match for the Falcons, has 18 saves and a saves percentage of .818 this fall.
