Bailey Arnold fires a new career-low 68 as the Falcons finish in sixth place overall.
Great Smokies Intercollegiate Final Results
WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – Breaking records is usually something one can talk about for a long time, however, that seems to not be the case lately for the Bowling Green State University women's golf team. Playing in their final round at the Waynesville Inn – golf Resort & Spa in Waynesville, N.C., the Falcons moved up two positions thanks to a record breaking day.
On the day, the Orange and Brown shot a team score of 288, breaking the previous-best 293, which was set only a week ago at the Redbird Invitational. BGSU also had a 36-hole score of 594, which also beat the previous-best by six strokes.
Eighth year head coach Stephanie Young featured a lineup over the past two days (Sept. 16-17) of Bailey Arnold, Patricia Holt, Lily Bartell, Hannah Lewis and Mikayla Baer. Coach Young saw four of her five players all improve their scores in the second round.
It was the first time they returned to the Great Smokies Intercollegiate since 2011. However, this time the Falcons saw drastic improvements both individually and as a team. In 2011, BGSU shot a 36-hole score of 612, seeing an improvement by 18 strokes.
A big part of that equation is Arnold. Arnold who shot a frustrating first round 79, fired back with a career-low round of 4-under 68 in her final round. For the tournament, Arnold finished with a 3-over 147 (79-68), improving by 11 strokes on the second day.
Bartell, who shot a 3-over 75 in the first round, bounced back with a 1-over 73 in her final round. Bartell carded a 4-over 148 overall, placing her in a tie for 22nd.
Lewis was another Falcon that saw her scorecard improve on the second day, answering back with an even-par 72 for a total of 153 on the tournament, placing her tied for 35th place.
Holt totaled a 154 (79-75) overall for the tournament, with a four stroke improvement from the first round. For the tournament, Holt finished tied for 37th position. Meanwhile, Baer carded a 155 (73-82) overall, placing her tied for 40th.
BGSU will be right back in action next week at the Cleveland State Invitational beginning on Monday, Sept. 23.
