NOTRE DAME, Ind.—The Bowling Green State University volleyball team was defeated by the University of Notre Dame on Friday night, dropping a four-set match in the Golden Dome Invitational. The match was played at Purcell Pavilion on the campus of Notre Dame. Seniors Danielle Tonyan, Paige Penrod, and Lindsey Butterfield led the way with double-digit kills.
Kaitlyn Skinner continued her solid play at the net for the Falcons, recording eight blocks for the third time in just four games this season. Skinner also had a season-high six kills.
The Orange and Brown scored the first point of the match, as Laura Avila set up Skinner for the kill to put the Falcons ahead 1-0. But, the Fighting Irish would score five consecutive points to take a 5-1 lead. Notre Dame would lead 10-6 in the first set, but the Falcons would go on a run from there. With the momentum turned, the Falcons would score eight of the next nine points, as they led 14-11 over the home team. UND would tie the score at 21 points apiece, and eventually go on to win the first set 28-26.
The Falcons would jump out to a quick 5-1 lead in the second set, as Skinner, Penrod, and Butterfield all recorded kills to begin the set. Notre Dame climbed within 5-3, before Tonyan recorded back-to-back kills and a block to give BGSU an 8-3 lead. Notre Dame would close to within 9-7, but the Falcons would score eight of the next 11 points to lead 17-10. The Irish would fight back to get within three, at 22-19, but the Falcons would pull away for a 25-20 win in the second set.
The ever-important third set was tightly contested throughout, as BGSU and ND were even through the first 14 points. The Irish would go on a run, as they would score nine of the next 13 points for a 16-11 lead. The Falcons would get to within three, at 16-13, but that would be the closest they would get the rest of the set. Notre Dame would claim the set, winning 25-19.
Notre Dame would score seven consecutive points in the fourth set, as they would break a 1-1 tie to take the lead for good. The Irish would continue their strong set, taking a 14-4 lead following an attack error by the Falcons. The Orange and Brown would get no closer than eight points the rest of the set, as the Falcons would lose the fourth, and decisive set, 25-13.
The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they face Dabrowa (Poland) at 3:30 p.m. The match will not be an official NCAA match, as Dabrowa is a professional, non-NCAA, team.
