With the beginning of the Bowling Green State University baseball season just 35 days away, head coach Danny Schmitz has announced the election of tri-captains for the 2014 season. Seniors Cody Apthorpe, Jeremy Shay, and T.J. Losby will serve as captains for the Orange and Brown this season.
Â
Apthorpe, a redshirt senior from Windham, Ohio, will serve as a team captain for the third consecutive season. He is just the second player in program history to be elected captain in three different seasons, joining Jamie Reiser who did so from 1984-86. Last season, Apthorpe threw 88.2 innings in his 17 starts, the most starts for a Falcon since 1999. He made two appearances in the MAC Tournament, and started the elimination game against Oklahoma State in the NCAA Tournament. His 88.2 innings were tied for eighth-most in a single season. Apthorpe was tied for the team lead with five wins last season.
Â
Losby, a senior from Bryan, Ohio, was elected a captain by his teammates for the second straight campaign. A first-team All-MAC catcher in 2013, Losby batted .327 with a team-high 39 RBI. The catcher and first baseman also had six home runs, five doubles, and a triple, while slugging .445. One of the best defensive catchers in the country, Losby was named second team All-District, as well.
Â
Shay, a senior from Garden City, Mich., was named a captain for the first time in 2014. He was named second-team All-MAC in 2013, despite winning the triple crown for best batting average, most home runs, and most RBI during Mid-American Conference play. The senior led the Falcons in average (.330), runs scored (35), doubles (15), and total bases (100). Shay was also named All-Regional for his performance in the NCAA Tournament's Louisville Regional.
Â
The Falcons open the season on February 14 when they travel to Nashville to take on Belmont in a three-game series. Be sure to follow @WEAREBGBaseball on Twitter for up-to-the-minute information and coverage during the 2014 baseball season.
