Maineville, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team battled moderate to heavy rain during most of the morning along with about a 90-minute delay due to lightning later in the day to finish the first round of play in fourth-place overall with a team score of 310, +22, on Monday at the Bearcat Classic hosted by the University of Cincinnati at the par-72, 6,186-yards TPC River's Bend Golf Course in Maineville, Ohio.
With the Falcons' first round team score of 310, +22, BGSU sits in fourth-place overall out of the 16 team field. BGSU is only three strokes behind the team leader through 18 holes of play.
Due to the inclement weather that hampered play throughout the day, the teams only played 18 holes on Monday instead of the scheduled 36 holes of play. Due to the weather, the second round was cancelled and the tournament will now only consist of 36 holes for the event.
"The team put four solid scores up on the board today. Shelby (Wilson) led with an outstanding round of 74. The conditions were very tough, but they all persevered and finished strong," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "(On the weather shortening the tournament) I don't think our mindset changed about how we could attack the course, but it may have provided an extra boost to finish strong knowing we would have one less round to compete."
Senior Shelby Wilson did not appear to be bothered by the rainy and wet conditions, as she posted a first round 74, +2, to finish day one in a tie for fourth-place overall. The Texas native posted a total of 12 pars and two birdies over her 18 holes of play.
Junior Lily Bartell carded one of her best rounds so far this fall season, as she carded two birdies on the front nine en route to a 78, +6. Bartell finished day one of play in a tie for 22nd-place overall.
Just one stroke behind Bartell was junior Hannah Lewis and sophomore Mikayla Baer who both turned in a first round 79, +7, to place in a tie for 31st-place overall after 18 holes of play. Lewis recorded eight straight pars on the back nine and birdied hole number nine, while Baer totaled two birdies over her day of play.
Sophomore Fran Rodriguez and senior Patricia Holt, who finished with rounds of 82, +10, and 85, +13, respectively, rounded out the lineup for the Falcons on day one. Rodriguez is in a tie for 57th-place overall, while Holt will enter day two of play in a tie for 71st overall.
The host institution in the University of Cincinnati leads the team standings with their first round score of 307, +19, while Morehead State (308, +20) and Eastern Kentucky (309, +21) round out the top-three.
The final round of play is slated for 18 holes of play tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
