Baraldi, Flynn, Genrich, James & Roth all named to second team
A total of five Bowling Green State University men's soccer standouts have been named to the 2014 All-Mid-American Conference Team. Senior Danny Baraldi, juniors Jake Genrich and Ryan James and sophomores Pat Flynn and Jacob Roth all were named to the second team.
The All-MAC Team, along with the specialty award winners, was announced on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 13) by the conference office.
Baraldi earns All-MAC honors for the third consecutive season, having been named to the all-conference second team a year ago and the first team in 2012. Flynn, Genrich, James and Roth all have made the all-league team for the first time in their respective Falcon careers.
BGSU was the only school without an all-conference first-team selection, but the Falcons' total number of five honorees was the third highest. Regular-season champion Akron had seven players named to the All-MAC Team, while West Virginia had six. Western Michigan had three All-MAC recipients, while Buffalo and Northern Illinois had one apiece.
The Falcons' total of five honorees is the team's most since 1996, and ties the school record. Prior to this season, BGSU had five players chosen to the all-league team in 1993, '94 and '96.
Baraldi, a native of Canton, Ohio (Massillon Jackson), has played in 16 matches this fall to date, and has 10 points on four goals and two assists. One of those four goals was the game winner, coming late in regulation at IPFW. Baraldi is the first BGSU player to record a double-digit point total in each of his four seasons since Chris Dore (1996-99). Baraldi, a team tri-captain, has played in 70 career matches with the Falcons, starting all but one, and has 57 career points on 18 goals and 21 assists. He is just one assist and two points away from moving into a tie for 10th place on each of those BG career lists.
Flynn, a native of Naperville, Ill. (Central), has started all 19 contests in his initial season with the Brown and Orange, and leads the team with 13 goals and 29 points. He ranks among the nation's leaders in goals, points, goals per game, points per game and game-winning goals. Flynn has six GWG this fall to date. He also has three multiple-goal games, including a five-goal performance in the Falcons' win over Findlay. Flynn tied the school records for both goals and points (11) in that BG win. His three assists include two that came on game-winning goals. Flynn is in his first season with the Falcons after transferring from DePaul University.
Genrich, who hails from Plymouth, Mich. (Salem), has started all 19 games at a central defender position, and is the only Falcon who has been on the field for every second of every match this season to date. Genrich has anchored a BG defense that has posted a MAC-best eight shutouts this season to date. BGSU currently ranks 34th in the nation in team goals-against average and 36th in shutout percentage. Genrich, a team tri-captain in 2014, has played in all 58 of BGSU's matches since his arrival on campus, starting 57.
James, a native of Mississauga, Ontario (Loyola Catholic Secondary), has started all 19 games this year, and has five assists, tying for second on the team in that category. Four of those five assists have come on game-winning goals, including in Saturday's (Nov. 8) victory at Northern Illinois, a win that helped the Falcons clinch a MAC Tournament berth. James has played 1,743 of the team's 1,791-plus minutes this fall. James, like Genrich, has played in all 58 of BGSU's matches since the start of his freshman year, and has made 48 starts. James has 19 career points on five goals and nine assists.
Roth, a native of Cleveland, Ohio (St. Ignatius), has started all 19 games at an outside defender spot. He least the team with eight assists, and ranks third on the Falcons with 14 points. His three goals include a pair of game-winning goals, with both coming in overtime. Roth's first career goal was a 'Golden Goal' in his hometown, as the Falcons defeated Cleveland State, and he converted a penalty kick in OT -- his second goal of the game -- in BG's win over Wright State. Roth has had two assists in a game three times this season, including in the Falcons' MAC victory against Western Michigan. After playing a total of 152 minutes over six games last season, Roth has been on the pitch for 1,721 minutes this fall to date.
The Falcons head to Akron to take part in this weekend's MAC Tournament. BGSU, the third seed for the four-team tournament, will face second-seeded WVU on Friday (Nov. 14) afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at UA's FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field. The BGSU-WVU winner will face either UA or WMU in Sunday's (Nov. 16) championship match.
