Lahaina, Maui (Hawai'i) – Battling the trademark Hawaiian trade winds and rain throughout the day, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team carded the fourth lowest team score over the 18-holes of play with a combined score of 300, +16, on Saturday to move up to eighth-place overall after two days of play at the 2014 Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic held at the Ka'anapali Golf Resort in Lahaina, Maui.
BGSU posted a second round 300, +16, to follow up a 282, -2 under par, on Friday, to move up a spot to eighth-place overall with a 36-hole combined team score of 582, +14. The Falcons are only two strokes behind Loyola Marymount who is in seventh-place overall with a score of 580, +12, and only 11 strokes out of the top-five.
"The conditions were ridiculous today with the rain and high winds," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "The guys played awesome in the tough conditions – Brett (Rinker) shot a 71 to tie the low round of the day – and overall we tied North Florida and were only three strokes behind Clemson who are both in a tie for third overall for the tournament."
Sophomore Brett Rinker carded his second straight round of 71, even par, to pace the Falcons on day two of play and move up to a tie for 16th-place overall with his 36-hole score of 142, even par. Rinker eagled the par-5 number six and also birdied the par-4 number 13 on his way to par which was tied for the low round of the day.
After shooting a 66 on Friday, Jose Narro shot a second round 77, +6, on Saturday to place him in a tie for 20th-place overall with his combined score of 143, +1. The sophomore totaled two birdies on the day on holes number 10 and 11.
Like Narro, Joe Cooper also posted a round of 77, +6, on Saturday, turning in a birdie on the par-3 number eight. The senior will enter the third and final round of play on Sunday in a tie for 55th-place overall with a two-round combined score of 151, +9.
Tied with Cooper in 55th-place overall is fellow Falcon Ryan Triller who recorded a second round 75, +4, on day two which included one birdie on both the front and back nine of play. Combined with his first round 76, +5, Triller will head into play on Sunday with a combined score of 151, +9.
Affected by the challenging weather conditions the most on Saturday was freshman Cameron Michalak. After posting a first round 71, even par, Michalak registered a second round 88, +17, on Saturday to give him a combined 36-hole score of 159, +17, and place him in a tie for 67th-place overall.
The top-five nationally ranked Oregon Ducks remain in first-place overall on the 13-team leaderboard with a two-round combined score of 545, -23 under par. Behind the Ducks are Georgia in second-place with a team score of 566, -2 under par, and both Clemson and North Florida tied for third-place overall with identical team scores of 569, +1.
The final round of play is set for an 8:00 a.m. (1:00 p.m. ET) shotgun start on Sunday morning.
