Pat Flynn Named to NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region First Team; Ryan James earns third-team honors
A pair of Bowling Green State University men's soccer standouts have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-Great Lakes Region Team, the organization has announced. Sophomore Pat Flynn was named to the all-region first team, while junior Ryan James earned third-team honors.
Flynn is the Falcons' first player to earn all-region first team accolades in 14 years, since Fred Degand in the 2000 season. The 2014 campaign marks the first time BGSU has had two all-region selections since 1999, when Chris Dore' was named to the first team and Degand to the second team.
Flynn is the Falcons' first player to earn all-region first team accolades in 14 years, since Fred Degand in the 2000 season. The 2014 campaign marks the first time BGSU has had two all-region selections since 1999, when Chris Dore' was named to the first team and Degand to the second team.
A native of Naperville, Ill. (Central H.S.), Flynn had one of the top seasons in program history. He started all 21 contests for head coach Eric Nichols in 2014, and led the team with 14 goals and 32 points. Those totals are the highest by a Falcon since 1996, and rank him among the national leaders.
Flynn's goal total was tied for the third-highest in a season in program history, and his point total deadlocked him for fifth on that BGSU list.
Flynn led the Mid-American Conference in total goals and game-winning goals (six), and he ranked second in the league in total points, goals per game (0.67) and points per game (1.52). He ranks among the national leaders in all five of those categories, as he is eighth or better on each list.
Flynn was directly involved in the scoring of nine of BGSU's game-winning goals in 2014. In addition to the six GWG he scored himself, three of his four assists this fall came on the winning tally. He tied program single-game records with five goals and 11 points in the Falcons' win over Findlay on Sept. 2.
Flynn was named to the All-MAC Second Team, and -- among many, many other honors he earned in 2014 -- also was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team.
James, a native of Mississauga, Ontario (Loyola Catholic Secondary), joined Flynn on the All-MAC Second Team in 2014. James started all 21 games this year, and finished with six assists, tying for second on the team in that category. Four of those six assists came on game-winning goals, including in the Falcons' victory at Northern Illinois (Nov. 8) which helped BGSU clinch a MAC Tournament berth.
James, a midfielder, had an assist in each of the first three matches of the season, and also had a helper on the winning goal at St. Bonaventure in late September. His final assist of the season came on Flynn's game-opening goal in the Falcons' overtime win over West Virginia in the MAC Tournament (Nov. 14).
James played a total of 1,924 of the team's 1,972-plus minutes this fall. He has played in all 60 of BGSU's matches since his arrival on campus, and has made an even 50 starts. James has 20 career points on five goals and 10 assists.
The Falcons had at least one player named to the NSCAA all-region team in each of 24 consecutive seasons, from 1978-2001. Then, BGSU did not have a player named to the team for over a decade, until Danny Baraldi earned third-team accolades in 2012.
The Falcons finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 14-6-1, and BGSU ended MAC regular-season play with a 2-2-1 league mark, good for a tie for third place in the six-team conference. BG's overall win total was the team's highest in 17 years, and the Brown and Orange advanced to the championship game of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2003.
