Ypsilanti, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University track and field team opened its indoor season Friday night by winning three events at the EMU Holiday Meet. Among the teams that competed at the event were Toledo, Oakland and the host school Eastern Michigan. No team scores were kept.
Freshman Kyla Paster won the long jump, sophomore Makenzie Wheat finished first in the shot put and junior Tiera Parker posted a win in the triple jump. In fact, in two of those events, the Falcons added a second place finish behind freshman Sydnee Matthew in the long jump and redshirt freshman Aliyah Gustafson in the shot put.
"This was our best meet in December in the last four years," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "Even being very early in the season, the increased depth of the team is obvious, especially considering those who did not compete. The freshmen made a major impact today, leading the way in many events. It should be exciting to see their development, as well as the rest of the team as we make our way through the season."
Paster established a collegiate personal best in the long jump with a distance of 18-feet-3.75. She outdistanced her teammate Matthew, who finished with a leap of 17-6.5. Wheat, who placed at the MAC Championships a year ago as a freshman, threw the shot put 46-10.5 to win. Gustafson was second at 46-0.
Parker was about a foot shy of her personal best in the triple jump, but still won at 37-4.75. Sophomore Raven Porter was fourth at 35-6.25. Porter was also second in the high jump, setting a new personal best at 5-5. Freshman Lexie Davis tied for fourth with a jump of 5-1.
Along with finishing second in the shot put, Gustafson was third in the weight throw with a toss of 54-7.75. Teammate Kayla Velasquez finished just behind her in fourth place at 51-8.
Senior Brittany Sinclair paced the Falcons in the 400, sprinting to a time of 58.46 seconds to finish third. Junior Demetra Taylor was right behind in 60.22 seconds for a fourth place finish. Freshman Cortisha Short added a third place finish in the 200 at 25.77, edging sophomore Gabrielle Edwards in fourth place at 25.82.
BGSU will now have more than a month off before hosting the BG Opener Jan. 10 in Perry Field House.
