Two More Records Fall As Falcons Surge

Geneva, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming team broke two more schools records and moved into third place on day two of the Mid-American Conference Championships Friday. The Falcons got record-breaking performances from sophomore Hannah Newman and the 800 free relay team.
Bowling Green moved from a fourth-place tie after day one to third place with 324 points after day two. In fact, the Falcons are just eight points behind Miami for second place.
Newman had the big swim in the morning prelims, qualifying first for the championship final in the 200 freestyle with a school record time of 1:48.71. But she was joined in the championship final by two of her teammates, senior Joelle Scheps and freshman Victoria Griffin. As well, senior Emily Waller and junior Erica Nieminen advanced to the consolation final.
Those five momentarily gave Bowling Green the lead at the MAC Championships, when Griffin placed third in the evening's finals, Scheps fourth and Newman seventh. Waller added a second-place finish in the consolation heat and Nieminen was fourth.
Earlier in the evening, the Falcons also had strong representation in the 400 individual medley finals, as Petra Laudova placed sixth in the championship final with a personal best 4:22.65, followed by Lara Klein and Jordan Bullock. The Falcons also had two swimmers in the consolation heat with Nicole Hranchook taking second and Stephanie Boyle finishing sixth.
Daniela Carrillo had the Falcons' best individual finish in the 100 breaststroke, placing second with a time of 1:01.83 after qualifying for the finals with a time of 1:01.82 in the morning prelims. Carmen Young finished seventh in the consolation heat.
In the 100 backstroke, Maya Skorupski set a personal best time of 56.21 to place finish in the consolation heat and teammate Haley Roberts was seventh in 56.78.
The meet ended with the 800 freestyle relay and the Falcons shattered the program record. Griffin, Scheps, Waller and Newman posted a time of 7:20.05, more than three seconds faster than the previous record of 7:23.27, to place second. The result brought the Falcons to within eight points of Miami and 54 points of Akron after day two.
Eastern Michigan sits in fourth place with 299 points and Buffalo is fifth with 291 heading to the last day of competition. Ball State is sixth with 241 points and Ohio is seventh with 240. Toledo rounds out the standings with 234 points.
Prelims begin at 11 am Saturday for the third day of competition and the finals take place at 7 pm.
