Kent, Ohio – Bowling Green scored 15 points on the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships and the Falcons sit in fifth place after Friday's competition.
A year ago, the Falcons ended 11th at the championships and scored just 12 points for the entire meet. But Bowling Green scored nine points in the first event of the day Friday and got a star performance from senior Jeanette Pettigrew in the process.
The meet opened with the weight throw and BGSU's duo of Brooke Pleger and Tina Perrine brought home big points. Pleger threw 66-feet-5.25 to finish fourth and Perrine was right behind in fifth with a throw of 59-5.75. With that result alone, BGSU already had nine points and then Pettigrew took over.
Competing in the final MAC Indoor Championships of her career, Pettigrew tied her own school record in the 200 with a time of 24.34 seconds to qualify for the finals in third. She posted a season-best time of 7.54 seconds in the 60 prelims to advance to finals in fourth. And she scored five points in the long jump by leaping 19-4 and finishing fourth. Amazingly, it was only the second time she competed in the long jump in her collegiate career.
Redshirt sophomore Jasmine Redman also surprised at the MAC Championships, beating her personal best in the 5000 by more than 19 seconds. Her time of 17:07.42 was good enough to get her on the medal stand in eighth place and was the best 5000 time for a Falcon since Jamie Roflow in 2008.
Junior Krystin Reiser completed a break-out season in the pentathlon by setting personal bests in two events and scoring a career-high 3,472 points. While she finished 10th at the MAC Championships, she scored over 600 points more than she did a year ago at the meet and was just over 100 points shy of BGSU's school record.
Sophomore Alicia Arnold battled back from an injury that sidelined her for the second half of the indoor season. Although she earned high seeds in the 200 and the long jump during the first half of the season, she just missed qualifying for the finals in the spring with a ninth place finish. She was 14th in the long jump at 17-7 but should be a factor during the outdoor season when she is at full strength.
Bowling Green will complete the MAC Championships Saturday at Kent State University. The Falcons have not finished higher than eighth at the meet since 2001, but will look to surpass that.
