Falcons Defeat Both Northern Illinois and Bradley On Day One of Match Play

Lakewood Ranch, Fla. – In the first spring tournament of the 2014 season, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team posted a first round 3-1-1 win over Northern Illinois during the morning session and then edged Bradley 3-2-0 in the second round of play on Monday afternoon at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge held at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
In the morning match up with the Huskies, sophomore Lily Bartell defeated Lena Gautier of Northern Illinois 4 & 2, while junior Shelby Wilson held on to down Sydney Brickey of NIU 3 & 1.
BGSU junior Patricia Holt edged the Huskies' Sam Coyne 2 & 1 to give the Falcons the three wins it needed to earn the team match play victory.
In the other two matches in the morning round of play, Bowling Green's Hannah Lewis finished all square with Jenny Niemiec of NIU, while senior Bailey Arnold fell to Connie Ellett of the Huskies 1 up over 18 holes of play.
The Falcons then moved on to face off with the Bradley Braves in the second round on Monday afternoon, where BGSU got wins from Bartell, Arnold and Lewis to slip past the Braves with the 3-2-0 match win.
Bartell again had a strong round of play, as she defeated Danielle Lemek 4 & 2 over 16 holes, while Arnold bounced back from the first round loss to beat Paige Jordan of Bradley 4 & 3 in only 15 holes of head-to-head play.
Lewis recorded the third win of the afternoon for the Falcons, as the sophomore used 17 holes to edge Katarina Mangieri of BU for the 2 & 1 win.
Both Holt and Wilson played well in the afternoon session, yet fell in their respective head-to-head matches.
The Falcons will take on the Toledo Rockets, who also won both of their matches on Monday, tomorrow morning for the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge Championship.
