BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- 28 games have been completed, 79 runs have scored, 15 home runs have been recorded, but the Bowling Green State University softball team has yet to play a game at Meserve Field, until now. The Falcons (11-16-1, 2-2 MAC) will host Wright State University (6-19, 3-1 Horizon) on Wednesday, April 2 in a doubleheader at Meserve Field, marking the Orange and Brown's home opener for the 2014 season under eighth year head coach Shannon Salsburg -- who owns the second most wins in the history of the program (164 wins). Coach Salsburg will lead a Falcons team into the twinbill against the Raiders that has hit over .260 as a team over the past several weeks, recording 69 hits, 15 doubles, two triples, and 15 homers on their way to a 6-4 record since March 11.
Another part of the recent success inside the chalk has been strong pitching efforts by junior Jamie Kertes in the circle. The Carnegie, Pa. native pitched 22.2 innings last weekend (March 28-30) against Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, going 2-1 with a 1.85 ERA in four appearances. Kertes' gutsy weekend performance concluded on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader against the Broncos, recording 12 strikeouts in 12.2 innings of work on the day. Overall, Kertes (7-11) owns a 2.21 ERA in 28 appearances on the season. The right-handed junior has struck out 77 batters and held her opponents to a .244 batting average in 114 innings of work.
Offensively, the Orange and Brown are led by senior Katie Yoho. Yoho, who batted .235 a season ago, has accumulated a .326 batting average in 28 games this season. The Grove City, Ohio native leads the Falcons with 28 hits and 46 total bases for a slugging percentage of .535. Yoho also has 17 RBI on the year and four home runs, which are second on the team behind senior Erika Stratton. Stratton, speaking of, has recorded 22 hits, four doubles, five homers and a team-leading 18 RBI for a .286 batting average in 28 games. Bowling Green has also seen freshman Chelsea Raker contribute at the plate, going 24-for-84 (.286) with five doubles, three home runs for 12 RBI in 28 games.
MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE OPENING WEEKEND (March 28-30)
