The Falcons split with Wright State on Wednesday's twinbill.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Senior Katie Yoho's walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning capped off a two-run come-from-behind extra inning victory by the Bowling Green State University softball team over visiting Wright State University on Wednesday (April 2) evening, as the Falcons (12-17-1) defeated the Raiders (7-20) 6-5 to salvage a split at Meserve Field. Earlier in the day, the Orange and Brown dropped game one of the twinbill by a score of 3-0.
"It's good to get the split today," Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "I am proud of the way we fought throughout the entire day."
Yoho led the Orange and Brown offensively, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a home run throughout the game. Senior classmate Erika Stratton also had a strong game at the plate, going 3-for-4 in the contest. Freshman Aspen Searle (2-for-4, RBI) and Madison Schrock (2-for-2, three runs) also contributed in the batter's box with multi-hit games for BGSU.
Sophomore Braiden Dillow started in the circle for the Falcons, allowing only hit through the first four innings of the game. For the game, Dillow allowed three earned runs and four hits in five innings of work in-between the chalk. Junior Jamie Kertes (8-12), relieved Dillow and earned the decision as she worked the final three innings allowing one run on five hits.
After jumping out to a 4-0 lead early in the game, the Raiders responded with a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to eventually force extra innings, as the teams entered extra frames deadlocked at 4-4. Wright State then capitalized with the opportunity and took their first lead of the game with an RBI single to left field off Kristi Boreing's bat to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning.
"We got to find a way to be sharper on the mound with a lead," Salsburg said. "It was definitely a learning experience for us."
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, Bowling Green fought back and tied the game when Searle hit a double to deep center field for the game-tying RBI. With runners on second and third, Yoho stepped to the plate and delivered when it mattered most, ripping a ball past WSU's first baseman for the walk-off single.
"I am proud of the way we clawed back into the game and won," Salsburg said. "We talk a lot about constantly finding a way to win and we saw the fire in the eye in the second game to find a way to win the game."
In game one, Kertes showcased a strong pitching effort in the circle but the Falcons recorded five hits and zero runs in the loss to the Raiders. Kertes, who was credited with a tough loss, allowed three earned runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings in the game, while Dillow recorded 1/3 inning in relief work.
Deadlocked at 0-0 through the first five innings of play, Wright State pushed across three runs in the final two frames to earn their seventh victory of the season.
"In game one we couldn't find a way to push a run across the plate and we put our backs against the wall"
Searle (1-for-3), Yoho (1-for-3), Stratton (1-for-3), Chelsea Raker (1-for-3) and Trista Mokienko (1-for-3) all accumulated a hit in the Falcons' 3-0 loss to the Raiders.
Bowling Green will return to the diamond in Mid-American Conference action this weekend, traveling to Ball State on Friday (April 4) to play in a doubleheader before hitting the road to Miami (OH) for single games on Saturday and Sunday. Ball State's twinbill on Friday afternoon is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
