BOWLING GREEN -- The Bowling Green State University softball team will take on Detroit in a midweek clash at Meserve Field on Wednesday (April 16) afternoon. The Falcons (16-21-1) will take on the Titans (4-30) in the doubleheader in what will mark the final non-conference home series the Orange and Brown will host for the 2014 campaign. Bowling Green will look to improve on their 37-8 all-time record against the Titans, and have taken the last three games from Detroit. The first pitch is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m., while the second game of the twin bill will be followed shortly after.
The Falcons will enter the two-game home stand with a 3-1 record at Meserve Field, outscoring its opponents by a 17-8 margin. The Orange and Brown have hit .327 with five doubles, three homers, and 17 RBI in front of the Falcon faithful on their home diamond. Freshman Aspen Searle leads the Orange and Brown offensively, batting .500 with a team-leading six hits, two doubles and one home run on the Falcons' home turf. Erika Stratton (.500), Madison Schrock (.400) and Emily McClelland (.333) have all hit over .300 at Meserve Field on the season as well. Bowling Green have also seen great pitching in the circle between the chalk at Meserve, as junior Jamie Kertes and sophomore Braiden Dillow have combined for a 1.81 ERA in four games. The two have allowed 26 hits on seven earned runs, while holding its opponents to a .257 batting average in the four games.
University of Akron Recap (April 11)
AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team stayed at .500 in Mid-American Conference play after defeating the University of Akron in the second game of its doubleheader on Friday (April 11) afternoon. Behind two home runs from freshman Chelsea Raker in game two, the Falcons (16-19-1, 4-4 MAC) defeated the Zips (17-10, 3-3 MAC) by a score of 4-1. Earlier in the day, the Orange and Brown lost to Akron by an identical score of 4-1.
Playing at Lee. R Jackson Field, Bowling Green plated four runs on nine hits behind a courageous efforts from Raker and sophomore pitcher Braiden Dillow. Offensively, the Falcons were led by Raker (3-for-4, four RBI), freshman Aspen Searle (3-for-4), and senior Erika Stratton (2-for-4, one run). The three Falcons combined for eight of the team's nine hits in the game, while freshman Madison Schrock added a single in the contest.
With Searle's three hits in the game, the freshman extended her hitting streak to five games (.421 batting average). Raker, meanwhile, recorded her second four RBI game over the past five games to add to a team-leading 22 RBI on the season.
Dillow (6-5), who recorded her first collegiate complete game against North Dakota last Monday, tossed her second-straight complete game, working all seven innings in the circle. The Lucasville, Ohio native surrendered just four hits and allowed one earned run in the winning effort.
Ohio University Recap (April 12-13)
Game One: ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to host Ohio University on Saturday (April 12) afternoon, falling to the Bobcats by a score of 6-0. Playing at the Ohio Softball Field, the Falcons (16-20-1, 4-5 MAC) fell to the Bobcats (22-17, 7-2 MAC) in game one of the Mid-American Conference weekend series.
Freshman Amanda Durham and Aspen Searle led the Orange and Brown offensively, combining for all three of Bowling Green's hits in the game. Durham, who went 2-for-3 with a double in the game, recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season under eighth year head coach Shannon Salsburg. Meanwhile, Searle extended her hitting streak to six games by going 1-for-3 in the losing effort. Searle has recorded a .450 batting average (9-for-20), four RBI, one double and two homers during the stretch.
Junior Jamie Kertes (10-15), who started in the circle for the Falcons, picked up a tough loss, allowing one earned one on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore Braiden Dillow finished the game, surrendering four hits and two earned runs in the closing 3.1 innings of the contest.
Game Two: ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Ohio University on Sunday (April 13) afternoon, falling to the Bobcats by a score of 3-2 in the weekend series finale at the Ohio Softball Stadium. The Falcons (16-21-1, 4-6 MAC) dropped their fourth game decided by one run, as the Bobcats (23-17, 8-2 MAC) took both games from Bowling Green over the Mid-American Conference weekend.
"Today was a tough loss for us," Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "I am proud of the fight we showed the entire game and we had opportunities the entire game."
The Falcons plated two runs on four hits in the game, as Amanda Durham, Madison Schrock, Chelsea Raker and Katie Yoho each went 1-for-3 in the game. Durham, who recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season yesterday (April 12), went deep in the first inning for her first collegiate home run. Yoho added to her team-leading 37 hits for the season with a solo homer in the fourth, giving her six home runs and 21 RBI on the season.
