KENT, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team fell to Kent State University, 10-4, on Sunday (April 20) afternoon's Mid-American Conference showdown. The Falcons (20-23-1, 6-8 MAC) used a pair of home runs to cut the Golden Flashes (21-15, 7-3 MAC) lead to within two runs late in the game, but Kent State held on at the Diamond at Dix Field to earn a two-game sweep over the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green struggled defensively on the dirt, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits and recorded six Falcon errors. The Golden Flashes scored six earned runs in the game as the defeated the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green recorded four runs on nine hits in the game, as freshman Aspen Searle (2-for-4), Chelsea Raker (2-for-4), and senior Katie Yoho (2-for-4, three RBI) led the Falcons offensively. Madison Schrock, Haley Schrock, and Chloe Giordano all recorded one hit in the game for the Orange and Brown.
Junior Jamie Kertes (12-17), who made her 25th start in the circle for Bowling Green, was credited with a tough loss. Kertes surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in the contest, while striking out one batter in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore Braiden Dillow came in and worked the final 3.1 innings of the tilt, allowing three earned runs on four hits in her 37th appearance of the season.
Kent State scored the game's first run of the contest, plating a single run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Golden Flashes an early 1-0 lead. After a leadoff single, Golden Flashes' Abbey Kedford singled down the left field line to grab the early advantage.
Bowling Green, however, showed resiliency and came right back, tying the game at 1-1 when Giordano smacked a leadoff solo home run to deep center field. Giordano's long ball marked her third collegiate homer in her career, and her first since March 8, 2013 in a 7-6 win over Evansville.
The White Plains, N.Y. native has now recorded at least one hit over her last three games, going 3-for-8 (.375) during the stretch. Overall, the junior infielder has six hits, one double, one home run and two RBI on the season.
Kent State broke the tie with a five-run third inning, giving the Golden Flashes a 6-1 advantage.
After Dillow retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth, Bowling Green came out aggressive in the top half of the fifth inning. The Falcons got the frame started with singles by Searle and Raker to place runners on first and second. With one out, Yoho blasted a three-run homer soaring over the left center wall to cut Kent State's lead to 6-4.
The home run marked the third of the weekend for the senior co-captain. Yoho went 6-for-15 (.400) in four games, compiling one double, three homers, and 12 RBI. The Grove City, Ohio native, overall, leads the team with a .319 batting average. Yoho has compiled a team-leading 45 hits, nine home runs and 34 RBI while starting in all 44 games this season.
The Golden Flashes were able to score a single run in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth to defeat the Falcons by a score of 10-4 in the weekend MAC affair.
Bowling Green will be back in action on Wednesday (April 23) afternoon, taking on IPFW in their final non-conference affair. The mid-week doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
