Fort Wayne, Ind. -- With the 2014 regular season winding down, the Bowling Green State University will take on IPFW on Wednesday (April 23) evening, playing in their final non-conference twin bill of the season. The Falcons (20-23-1) will take on the Mastodons (31-13) for the third time in the last four years, going 1-3 during that time against IPFW. The mid-week twin bill will be played at the IPFW Softball Field, home of the Mastodons. The two teams will take the diamond for the 11th time in program's history, as both BGSU and IPFW are tied 5-5 all-time against each other.
The Orange and Brown are led offensively by senior Katie Yoho, as the senior was named MAC East Player of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league offices. Yoho batted .400 (6-for-15) with one double, three homers, and 12 RBI to help the Falcons go 2-2 over the MAC weekend against Buffalo and Kent State. Overall, the senior owns a team-best .319 batting average, 45 hits, nine home runs, and 34 RBI. The Falcons' other senior, Erika Stratton, has also done her share of driving in runs. The Las Vegas, Nev. native has drove in 27 RBI while batting .282 in 44 games. Freshman Chelsea Raker and Aspen Searle have also contributed as the plate, combining for 79 hits, 10 doubles, one triple and 37 RBI. Overall, all four players have combined for 159 hits, 21 doubles, two triples, 24 home runs, and 98 RBI on the season.
Meanwhile, in the circle, junior Jamie Kertes and sophomore Braiden Dillow have combined to make 79 appearances and 183 strikeouts for the season. Kertes, a Carnegie, Pa. native, owns a 12-17 record with a 2.53 ERA and seven complete games. The junior owns a team-leading 171.1 innings pitched, while holding her opponents to a .272 batting average. Dillow, a Lucasville, Ohio native, currently holds a 3.02 ERA and an 8-6 record. The sophomore has two complete games, working 116 innings in the circle for the Orange and Brown.
Doubleheader vs. Buffalo (April 18)
BUFFALO, NY – The Bowling Green State University softball team kicked off their Mid-American Conference weekend by defeating the University at Buffalo twice on Friday (April 18) afternoon, earning a sweep over the Bulls at Nan Harvey Field. The Falcons (20-21-1, 6-6 MAC) took the first game by a 6-1 final before taking a 12-11 win over the Bulls (20-19, 4-4 MAC) to close out the evening.
The Orange and Brown outscored the Buffalo by an 18-12 margin on the day, and never trailed in either game to improve to 9-10 playing as the visitor on the scoreboard. With the two-game sweep, the Falcons extended their winning streak to a season-high four games and clawed back to .500 in MAC play.
"Today was big for us," Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "We found a way to sweep against a team that fought every step of the way."
Series vs. Kent State (April 19-20)
Day One: KENT, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Kent State University on Saturday (April 19) afternoon, dropping the first game of the Mid-American Conference weekend series by a score of 8-0. Playing at the Diamond At Dix field—home of the Golden Flashes—the Falcons (20-22-1, 6-7 MAC) were held to just two hits as the Golden Flashes (20-15, 6-3 MAC) improved to 4-3 on their home grass.
Bowling Green were led offensively by freshman Madison Schrock and junior Chloe Giordano, as the two each recorded one hit in the tilt. Meanwhile, sophomore Braiden Dillow (8-6) earned the start in the circle for the Orange and Brown, working 3.2 innings while surrendering four earned runs on five hits in the losing effort. Junior Jamie Kertes came into the game to pitch the final 1/3 innings in relief work, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
Kent State struck Dillow for three runs in the second, which started a streak of four straight innings in which the Golden Flashes plated at least one run. The Golden Flashes scored the first run of the game with an RBI single to right center. Kent State then added to its lead with a two-out RBI triple to right center to hand Kent State a 3-0 lead.
Day Two: KENT, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team fell to Kent State University, 10-4, on Sunday (April 20) afternoon's Mid-American Conference showdown. The Falcons (20-23-1, 6-8 MAC) used a pair of home runs to cut the Golden Flashes (21-15, 7-3 MAC) lead to within two runs late in the game, but Kent State held on at the Diamond at Dix Field to earn a two-game sweep over the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green struggled defensively on the dirt, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits and recorded six Falcon errors. The Golden Flashes scored six earned runs in the game as the defeated the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green recorded four runs on nine hits in the game, as freshman Aspen Searle (2-for-4), Chelsea Raker (2-for-4), and senior Katie Yoho (2-for-4, three RBI) led the Falcons offensively. Madison Schrock, Haley Schrock, and Chloe Giordano all recorded one hit in the game for the Orange and Brown.
Junior Jamie Kertes (12-17), who made her 25th start in the circle for Bowling Green, was credited with a tough loss. Kertes surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in the contest, while striking out one batter in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore Braiden Dillow came in and worked the final 3.1 innings of the tilt, allowing three earned runs on four hits in her 37th appearance of the season.

YOHO TABBED AS MAC EAST PLAYER OF WEEK
Cleveland, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference announced Monday afternoon that senior Katie Yoho has been named the MAC East Player Of The Week. Yoho helped the Falcons to a 4-2 record this past week, including a 2-2 record in MAC play. Yoho led the Falcons offensively over the weekend, leading the team at the plate going 6-for-15 (.400) with one double, three home runs, and 12 RBI against Buffalo and Kent State. Yoho got the weekend started by hitting home runs in back-to-back games during the Falcons' doubleheader sweep over the Bulls on Friday (April 18) afternoon. Yoho began the day with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning in game one to help the Falcons earn a 6-1 victory over Buffalo. Then, the right-handed senior continued her strong efforts by going 3-for-5 with a double and a home run to compile a career-high seven RBI in the game, helping BBGSU sweep the Bulls. Yoho concluded her strong weekend by going 2-for-4 at the plate on Sunday afternoon against Kent State, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning to pull the Falcons within 6-4. Yoho also went 2-for-4 with an RBI during the Falcons' mid-week doubleheader sweep over Detroit on Wednesdat (April 16) afternoon.Overall, the Grove City, Ohio native leads the Orange and Brown with a .319 batting average in 44 games this season. Yoho also has compiled a team-leading 45 hits, nine home runs, 80 total bases, and 34 RBI.
