Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team will compete at the 2014 MAC Women's Golf Championships this weekend, April 25-27, at the Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers, Indiana.
The Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships return to The Hawthorns for the third time. The Arthur Hills-designed course also played host to the 2010 and 2012 events.
This year's conference championship tournament event, which will be hosted by Ball State, will be played at the par 72, 6,102-yards Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers, Indiana and will consist of nine teams in Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan.
Head coach Stephanie Young will send out the team of Lily Bartell, Patricia Holt, Bailey Arnold, Shelby Wilson and Mikayla Baer to represent the Falcons. The five Falcon golfers have combined to play in a total of eight MAC Championship Tournaments over their careers at BGSU, as four of them in Bartell, Holt, Arnold and Wilson all played in last year's conference championship event.
Bartell, who led BGSU with a 12th-place finish last year as a freshman at the 2013 MAC Women's Golf Championships, will be playing in her second straight conference championship event and her 11th tournament overall on the year. The sophomore, who was named the MAC Women's Golfer of the Week on April 17th, leads the team with a stroke average of 76.60 over 20 rounds of play on the year. Bartell has also posted four top-five finishes on the season highlighted by her first-ever intercollegiate win at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational just two weeks ago.
Holt will being teeing-off in her third MAC Championship Tournament event this weekend, as the junior finished tied for 33rd overall last year after turning in a 42nd-place finish as a freshman back in 2011-12. Holt, who has two top-10 finishes this season, is coming off a round of 79, +7, at the WMU vs. BGSU Dual Match back on April 17th. However, this season she has posted a low round 73, as well as two rounds of both 74 and 75, en route to a stroke average of 78.45 overall.
Making her fourth straight appearance in the MAC Championships, Arnold has finished as high as 20th overall at the event back as a freshman in 2010-11. The senior, who has played in all 10 events for the Falcons this season, has posted five top-25 finishes on the year and has recorded a stroke average of 79.00 over 20 rounds of play. Earlier this year at The Preview event at the Hawthorns Golf & Country Club, Arnold carded rounds of 85 and 79 to finish in a tie for 38th-place overall with a 36-hole score of 164, +20.
Like Bartell, Holt and Arnold, Wilson has competed in the MAC Championships for the Falcons in every year that she has been at Bowling Green and she will continue that this year with her third straight appearance in the annual postseason tournament. The junior has improved in her play over each of the previous two MAC Tournament events, as she jumped from a 28th-place showing in 2011-12 to a 16th-place finish in 2012-13, improving her 54-hole score by seven strokes between the two events. With two top-10 finishes, including a first-place win at the Cleveland State Invitational in the fall, Wilson has posted a stroke average of 78.53 over 17 rounds of play in eight events for the Falcons on the year. At The Preview tournament in early October, Wilson shot an 80 and 78 to finish in a tie for 16th overall with a two-round score of 158, +14.
The lone newcomer to the conference championship event for the Falcons is Baer. However, the freshman brings experience to the postseason tournament this weekend, as she has played in eight events on the year, including each of the last three tournaments. Baer is coming off a round of 78, +6, at the WMU vs. BGSU Dual Match on April 17th and has carded scores of 78, 78 and 79 in three of her last five rounds of play. She has turned in a season-low round 73 once this year and has posted a stroke average of 80.88 over a total of 17 rounds of play this season.
BGSU as a team has finished in sixth (2012-13), eighth (2011-12), ninth (2010-11), eighth (2009-10) and ninth (2008-09) in each of their last five MAC Women's Golf Championship appearances. The Falcons best team finish at the conference championship event has been fifth overall which BGSU has done three times (1997-98, 1999-2000, 2000-01).
Tee times for all three days will start at 8:00 a.m. with the final pairing teeing-off at approximately 10:20 a.m.
