Athens, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University track and field team placed two student-athletes in the top five in the long jump as the Falcons exceeded their scoring total from a year ago on day two of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday.
Â
Bowling Green ended the second of three days at the MAC Championships with 31 points to sit in fourth place, just one point behind Akron and two behind Miami. Kent State leads the way with 47 points. BGSU has surpassed the 23 points it scored a year ago at the conference meet and has already posted its best total since 2011. The Falcons entered the day tied with Ohio for fourth but outscored the Bobcats and closed the gap on both of the teams directly in front of them.
"We've exceeded our expectations in the first two days," BGSU track and field coach Lou Snelling said. "We've set ourselves up well for the final day and to take a sizeable step from last year."
Â
BGSU picked up nine of the 13 points it scored on Friday in the long jump. Sophomore Alicia Arnold finished fourth and senior Jeanette Pettigrew was fifth. Arnold was in danger of not even making the finals but snuck in on her final jump of the preliminary round. After fouling on her first of three leaps in the finals, she launched a personal best 19-feet-7.5 on her second attempt to move up the standings, eventually finishing fourth. Pettigrew, on the other hand, posted a mark that put her solidly into the finals on her second jump before going 19-6 on her next attempt to finish fifth.
"Alicia had to hit it on her third jump to get to finals," Snelling said. "Then she had the 19-7.5 on her fifth jump. That's a good welcome to the MAC for her. As she gets more experience, she will learn to balance all of the events she competes in."
Â
Bowling Green also got three points from Andrea Alt in the 3000 steeplechase. The sophomore was seeded seventh for the meet but she ran a personal best time of 10:46.37 despite weather conditions that had turned to windy and rainy by the time the race was competed. Alt finished in sixth place, improving a spot from a seventh place finish as a freshman.
Â
The Falcons' other point of the day came in the shot put, where freshman Makenzie Wheat threw 46-3.5 to place eighth. In her first MAC outdoor championship meet, she had a strong toss on her first attempt of the day to qualify for finals. In her first throw of finals, she posted her best result to clinch a spot on the podium.
"For a true freshman to score in the shot put in both indoor and outdoor, that's really saying something in our conference," Snelling said.
Â
Junior Krystin Reiser completed day two of the heptathlon Friday, finishing with a career-best 4,591 points, the eighth-best total in BGSU history over the seven events in two days. She had a personal best in the javelin of 102-10, smashing her previous best of 91-8.
Â
Many preliminary races were contested as well on Friday, with Pettigrew qualifying for Saturday's finals in both the 100 and 200. Pettigrew entered as the top seed in the 100 and posted the second-best time of the day. She finished third in the 200 prelims. Junior Natalie Sommerville qualified for the finals in the 400 hurdles after recording a personal-best time of 62.19 seconds.
Â
BGSU will complete the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Goldsberry Track on the campus of Ohio University. The high jump and discus both begin at 10:30 am and the meet will conclude with the 1600 relay at 4:40 pm.
