May 29, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University redshirt junior Brooke Pleger was named Capital One Academic All-District for women's track and field/cross country today, as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and be nominated by the institution's sports information director. Pleger was selected in District 5, which covers all NCAA Division I student-athletes in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Pleger holds a 3.72 GPA in nursing and is one of the top hammer throwers in the country, currently ranking second in the nation. She is unbeaten this year in the event and is a legitimate contender to win a national championship. Pleger won the Mid-American Conference Championship in the hammer throw, breaking her own meet record in the process. She has a career-best distance of 223-feet, ranking her 10th all-time among American collegiate hammer throwers. Pleger was a first team All-American in 2013 after placing seventh at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
Pleger is the fifth student-athlete from BGSU to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors this year, joining Brandon Silva of the men's soccer team, Tyler Tate of the football team, Nikki Chiricosta of the tennis team and Joelle Scheps of the swimming team. Silva was named second team Academic All-America.
All those who are named Academic All-District are placed on the Capital One Academic All-America ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected.
