Defiance, Ohio – Bowling Green State University freshman Madelynn Swank earned the first-place win her very first intercollegiate tournament on Sunday, as the Falcons also posted a team win at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament hosted by Defiance College at the par-71, 5,891-yards Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance, Ohio.
The Falcons had five of the top-seven golfers on Sunday at the one-day event and posted a team-low score of 319, +35, to win the event by a total of 39 strokes out of the seven-team tournament field.
"We are very proud of the way this group played today. They worked hard together as a team and that's important," stated head coach Stephanie Young. "Maddy Swank had a super showing at her first event as a Falcon. And the sophomore class came through with solid scores in the 70's."
Swank made a splash in her collegiate debut for the Falcons, as the freshman posted a tournament-low score of 75, +4, to win the event.
The Falcon freshman edged fellow teammates Mikayla Baer and Fran Rodriguez, as the two sophomores finished in second and third overall with scores of 78, +7, and 79, +8, respectively.
Fellow freshman Miranda Dubler posted a round of 87, +16, to finish in sixth-place overall in her first intercollegiate event, while junior Julia Hoffman carded an 88, +17, to finish in seventh-place overall.
The Falcons finished 39 strokes ahead of Siena Heights University, who finished in second-place with a team score of 358, +74.
All five BGSU players were named to the All-Tournament Team.
BGSU will next compete at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University at the Players Club in Yorktown, Indiana on Sept. 22-23.
