Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team will tee-off at the Cardinal Classic next week on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 22-23, hosted by Ball State University at The Players Club in Yorktown, Indiana.
After a one-year hiatus, the 36-hole event will be played at the par-72, 6,164-yards golf course at The Players Club with 18 holes on each day of play. Both days will start with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The 16 team field includes host Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Grand Valley State, IPFW, IUPUI, Northern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Rend Lake, Valparaiso, Western Illinois and Western Michigan, while Indiana will have a number of players compete as individuals.
Head Coach Stephanie Young will once again send out an experienced group this week in seniors Patricia Holt and Shelby Wilson, as well as juniors Hannah Lewis and Lauren Diehl. Sophomore Fran Rodriguez will round out the lineup for the Falcons, while fellow sophomore Mikayla Bear and junior Lily Bartell will both play as individuals at the event.
In the fall opener, Holt posted two team-low rounds over the first two rounds of play for the Falcons at the Redbird Invitational with a 75 and 76, before posting an 83 on the final day of play to finish with a combined 54-hole score of 234, +18. The senior still led BGSU with a 28th-place finish at the event.
Unlike Holt, Wilson improved each and every round of play at the Redbird Invitational, shooting rounds of 84, 77 and 76 to finish in a tie for 43rd-place overall with her combined three round score of 237, +21.
Matching Wilson's 237, +21, and 43rd-place showing at the Redbird Invitational was Lewis. Lewis was consistent over her three rounds of play, carding a 79, 80 and 78 to comprise her score of 237, +21, while Diehl was also steady over the two-days of play with rounds of 78, 81 and 79 which was good enough to put her in a tie at 48th with her 54-hole score of 238, +22.
Rodriguez opened up the 2014 fall slate with a 79, +8, last Sunday at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament and will be making her second straight appearance in Coach Young's lineup in just her second season at BGSU.
Both Bear and Bartell have already competed for the Falcons this season, as Baer carded a round of 78, +7, for a second-place finish at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial last Sunday, Sept. 14, while Bartell posted rounds of 82, 79 and 85 for a combined score of 246, +30, at the Redbird Invitational on Sept. 8-9.
Ball State won the last time the tournament was held in the fall of 2012, while Marshall's Korakot Simsiriwong was the individual medalist, defeating Ball State's Jenna Hague in a playoff.
Western Michigan has won the tournament four times, while Ball State and Eastern Michigan have each won it three times. Butler and Southern Illinois own one title apiece.
