Yorktown, Indiana – Bowling Green State University sophomore Fran Rodriguez wrapped up day one of play in a tie for 10th-place overall, as she paced the Falcons on Monday at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University at The Players Club in Yorktown, Indiana.
As a team, the Falcons posted a first round score of 311, +23, and find themselves in a tie for sixth-place overall with host Ball State University. BGSU is only six strokes out of the top-three and just 13 strokes behind the team leader out of the 16 team field.
"We are definitely in position to move up tomorrow and continue to look at putting four scores in the 70s on the board," stated head coach Stephanie Young.
Rodriguez carded three birdies on the day to record a BGSU low round of 74, +2, which placed her in a tie for 10th-place overall after one round of play. Her 74 on Monday marks the lowest 18-hole score of her young career at Bowling Green. Rodriguez finished day one tied for the lowest par-3 scoring average on the day at 2.67, -1, while her three birdies is tied for the fifth most on the day.
"Fran (Rodriguez) had a career day and helped lead the team in a big way today," continued Coach Young. "It's great to see her have success as she is a tireless worker."
Behind Rodriguez's 74, was senior Patricia Holt's round of 77, +5, as the senior turned in one birdie and a team-high 12 pars on Monday. Holt will enter Tuesday's final round of play in a tie for 18th-place overall.
Matching Rodriguez's three birdies was senior Shelby Wilson, as posted a 35, -1 under par, on the front nine enroot to her first round score of 78, +6, good enough to place her in a tie at 26th overall.
Rounding out the scoring for the Falcons were juniors Hannah Lewis and Lauren Diehl who carded rounds of 82, +10, and 88, +16, respectively. Lewis is in a tie for 56th overall, while Diehl is in a tie for 86th overall after day one.
Playing as individuals, junior Lily Bartell wrapped up day one in a tie for 13th-place overall with her 18-hole score of 76, +4, while sophomore Mikayla Baer shot a first round 79, +7, to sit in a tie for 33rd overall. Bartell turned in two birdies and a par-3 scoring average of 3.00, even par, on the day, while Baer turned in a birdie on par-4 18.
Fellow MAC member Eastern Michigan is leading the event with a team score of 298, +10, on Monday, while Western Michigan (302, +14) and Ohio (305, +17) are in second and third-place, respectively, in the team standings.
The final round of play is scheduled to tee-off at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning with a shotgun start.
