Rochester, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team had five different players finish day one of play in the top-20, while seniors Patricia Holt and Shelby Wilson both sit in a tie for third-place overall after the first round of play on Saturday at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational hosted by Oakland University at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester, Michigan.
"We had great leadership today from our seniors. I am proud of the way they battled and posted solid numbers for the team," commented head coach Stephanie Young.
The Falcons, who sent two teams to the two-day weekend event, has one team in third-place with a first round team score of 321, +33, and the other squad in sixth-place with a team score of 339, +51. There are seven teams in the tournament field.
"It is a benefit any time we can get players tournament experience. There is nothing quite like the real thing, especially on a course such as this," continued Coach Young. "We are looking forward to the opportunity of another round on this golf course. It is a challenge and there are many areas where we want to execute better tomorrow."
Both Holt and Wilson paced team one with scores of 77, +5, to finish the first round of play tied for third overall, as each had one birdie on the round. However, Holt carded 11 pars over her 18-holes of play, while Wilson bettered her fellow classmate with 12 pars on the day.
BGSU sophomore duo of Fran Rodriguez and Mikayla Baer followed the veterans with rounds of 82, +10, and 85, +13, respectively, to place in a tie for 15th and 25th-place overall. Like Holt and Wilson, both Rodriguez and Baer each registered one birdie on the day.
Rounding out the scoring for the Falcons' first team was junior Hannah Lewis who carded an 86, +14. She like her teammates had one birdie on Saturday.
Leading the way for team two was junior Lily Bartell and freshman Madelynn Swank who both finished day one tied for 18th-place overall with each carding an 18-hole score of 83, +11. Bartell posted a birdie on the par-5 sixth-hole, while Swank turned in birdies on the par-5 first hole and the par-4 fifth-hole.
Junior Lauren Diehl concluded day one with a score of 85, +13, good enough to place in a tie for 25th overall, while freshman Miranda Dubler and junior Julia Hoffman shot rounds of 88, +16, and 99, +27, respectively.
The final round of play is set for an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start tomorrow morning.
