Normal, Illinois – After posting team scores of 314 and 312 over the first two rounds of play on Sunday, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team turned in a team score of 316 on Monday in the third and final round of play to finish in eighth -place overall at the 2014 Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State University at the par-72, 6,086-yards course at The Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.
The Falcons' rounds of 314, 312 and 316 put BGSU in eighth-place out of the 16 team field with a combined 54-hole team score of 942, +78. BGSU finished ahead of South Dakota State, Loyola, Oakland, Western Illinois, Drake, Marshall, Central Michigan and Evansville.
"We had a solid start with a top half finish this week. We also counted scores from each player over the three rounds which shows early signs of the depth we have on our roster," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "There are several things we want to improve upon going into our next event."
Senior Patricia Holt, who carded rounds of 75, +3, and 76, +4, on Sunday, posted a third round 83, +11, on Monday to finish with a combined 54-hole tournament score of 234, +18, and in a tie for 28th-place overall.
Fellow senior Shelby Wilson continued to improve her play on Monday, as she posted a team-low round of 76, +4, over the third round of play, which included a birdie on the 11th hole. Wilson went from a first round 84, +12, to a second round 77, +5, and finally a third round 76, +4, to finish in a tie for 43rd-place overall with a three-round combined score of 237, +21.
Also finishing in a tie for 43rd was junior Hannah Lewis who carded three birdies and a score of 78, +6, over her third round of play. When added with her first two round scores of 79, +7, and 80, +8, Lewis finished the event with a combined score of 237, +21.
Just one stroke back of both Wilson and Lewis was fellow Falcon Lauren Diehl, as the junior shot rounds of 78, 81 and 79, to finish in a tie at 48th-place with her combined score of 238, +22.
Falcon junior Lily Bartell ended her three rounds of play with a final round of 85, +13, to end the two-day event in a tie at 69th-place with a 54-hole score of 246, +30.
The host of the event in the Redbirds of Illinois State took first-place honors overall, as the Redbirds carded rounds of 307, 304 and 299 to finish with a tournament low team score of 910, +46.
Both Northern Illinois and Butler finished 12 strokes behind Illinois State to finish in a tie for second-place overall with matching team scores of 922, +58, while Ball State (925, +61) and Ohio (926, +62) rounded out the top-five.
Individually, Brianna Cooper of Illinois State ran away with the win, posting a low 54-hole score of 218, +2, to take first-place overall and finish a total of six strokes ahead of the next competitor.
Bowling Green will return to the links this Sunday, Sept. 14, as the Falcons will send a team to the one-day Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament hosted by Defiance College.
