YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team – which scored its second-highest team score on the season – was defeated by Eastern Michigan, 195.250-192.425, Saturday (Jan. 24) evening at the Convocation Center in both school's Mid-American Conference opener.
"There were definitely some individual highlights, but we are trying to build a team score," said head coach Kerrie Turner. "I really feel like we need to pull it together. We're going to really have to get back in the gym, and get our training back on track to make sure that next weekend – when we head out to Washington, D.C. – that we do a good job."
On her first collegiate routine, freshman Laura Mitchell scored a 9.850 to place first on beam. Jamilah Ali also earned a first-place finish, as she scored a 9.850 on vault. Ali has now earned three straight first-place finishes to open the 2015 season. The senior's 9.875 on vault in Bowling Green's season-opening meet against Michigan State tied a career high, while her 9.625 on beam at the Ozone Collegiate Classic last weekend placed her in a three-way tie for first place on the apparatus.
Victoria Heath also had a nice meet for the Falcons. The sophomore set new career highs on both vault and floor. Heath posted a 9.725 on floor to lead the Falcons – along with sophomore Lauren Feely – on the apparatus. Heath's 9.700 on vault earned her an 8th-place finish.
Bowling Green's other score of 9.800 or above was earned by Feely. The 2014 MAC Freshman of the Year registered a 9.800 on vault, which placed her tied for third across the entire competition.
Freshman Jordan Rae turned in a strong meet as well, setting a career high on beam with a 9.675. Rae also led the Falcons on bars with a 9.725, which placed her tied for fifth on the night. Junior Alyssa Nocella – who earned a 38.425 to place second in the all-around – contributed as well, and scored a 9.725 on beam, and a 9.700 on uneven bars.
The Falcons will travel to our nation's capital for a Feb. 1 dual meet with George Washington. The competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Bowling Green will then head back to Anderson Arena for two more dual meets in a span of three days, as the Orange and Brown will host Ohio State on Feb. 6 and Ball State on Feb. 8.
