Athens, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored two late goals in the second half, but surrendered four first half goals to Ohio on Sunday afternoon, as the Falcons fell on the road to the Bobcats 4-2 in conference play at Chessa Field.
Â
Both teams entered the match on a downward slide, with OU coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak and BGSU having dropped its previous three. The loss drops BGSU to 6-9-1 on the season, while Ohio improves to 5-10-0 on the season.
Â
"We continued to battle even though we were down," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We have to keep learning through each moment and each result to make us stronger for the next. It's my job to keep our process moving forward and that's exactly what we will do this week. Onto the next one."
Â
Down 4-0 in the second half, the Falcons continued to fight, firing five consecutive shots from the 59th to the 81st minute. Madison Schupbach started the barrage with a header attempt, followed by a pair of on-frame Erica Hubert shots, and rounded out by Skylar Fleak's two attempts.
Â
With time running out, Fleak and Hubert each fired another shot toward Bobcat goalkeeper Taylor Smith, but neither found the back of the net.
Â
The determination from the Falcon attack paid off in the 86th minute, as Kara Ross converted her shot from the left side of the box for her third goal of the season. Still fighting for scoring opportunities despite the clock winding down, Schupbach sent a header into the goal off of a Juli Knapp corner kick at the 89:13 mark of the match to cut the Ohio lead to 4-2. The goal was Schupbach's third of the season.
Â
The second half began with Ohio launching five straight shots on the Falcons, three sailing offline and two on frame as BGSU goalkeeper Lauren Cadel recorded two stops on the plays.
Â
An early lapse by the Falcons saw the Bobcats score their first three goals in just over a six-minute span (9th, 12th, 15th minutes), while the last Ohio goal came in the 38th minute.
Â
The Falcons were immediately put on the defense as the Bobcats rattled off four shots over the first 15 minutes of the game, three of which snuck past Cadel. Ohio's offensive attack registered 13 first half shots compared to Bowling Green's four.
Â
BGSU looked to even the score at one as Schupbach sent a shot wide in the 10th minute. Later in the half trailing 3-0, Hubert fired off two shots in the 16th and 24th minutes, but both attempts were saved by Smith, while sophomore Mikaela Couch's shot in the 31st minute was blocked by the Bobcat defense.
Â
Cadel made two saves in goal for the Falcons in the first half, the first on a shot by Rianna Reese in the 23rd minute and the second on a shot from Hannah Jaggers in the 44th minute. She tallied seven total saves in 90 minutes on the pitch for BGSU.
Hubert led both teams with five total shots in the game, four of which were on goal. Schupbach and Fleak added three each, while Couch and Ross contributed one a piece.
Â
The Falcons were outshot by Ohio 22-13 for the match, but held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
Â
After playing four straight conference matches on the road, Bowling Green returns to Cochrane Stadium on Oct. 23 against Northern Illinois at 7 pm, and then again two days later versus Western Michigan at 1 pm.
