Bowling Green, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team completes its regular season home schedule this weekend with a Friday night matchup against Northern Illinois and a Sunday afternoon contest versus Western Michigan.
FALCONS AT A GLANCE
BGSU currently holds a 6-9-1 record overall and are 2-6-0 in the MAC in the final push for the conference tournament. The Orange and Brown come off two losses to Kent State and Ohio last weekend, and look to improve to 4-6 in the conference this weekend. Individually, Erica Hubert leads the team with seven goals and 15 points. Senior co-captain Lauren Cadel has recorded 104 saves this season, which leads all goalkeepers in the Mid-American Conference.
COACH'S COMMENTS- LINDSAY BASALYGA
On the weekend ahead: "We've had a competitive and spirited week of training. We've spent a lot of time attacking and defending in front of goal which has given us a little bit more confidence. I think we are physically ready to compete, but more importantly I like our mentality heading into the weekend. I believe the team is ready to take on the challenge they have laid out in front of them."
On senior day Sunday: "Haley and Lexi have been such an important part of our journey, both in their unique ways. We challenge our players to leave the program better than they found it. If you measure success by numbers, Haley and Lexi have left it much better than it was found. If you measure it by impact on 'people', well….that is something only our family will have the luxury of measuring."
On Alexis Smith: "Lexi took a chance on us last fall. She transfered into a program that hadn't won a game in 2013 and has since moved us to six more wins than she came in with. More importantly, Lexi has helped shape our culture in ways she may never understand. There's no tougher position than goalkeeper, and this fall, she has made a choice to push the bar and help us prepare for greatness. Lexi's outlook on life, strength in adversity and 'free-spirited' personality has unlocked greatness in others, not only within our own program, but in the U-14 girls team she has been coaching for the last two seasons."
On Haley Parkinson: "Haley came in with a class of nine and she is the only one being celebrated today (Lauren will graduate next fall). She made a choice to persevere through this grueling process we call 'rebuilding' and has thrived in every challenge that has been laid in front of her. Haley has been an incredible leader and role model to her peers and we wouldn't be where we are today without her commitment to the unknown."
MAC TOURNAMENT SCENARIO
Bowling Green enters the weekend tied for 10th place in the MAC, with eight teams making it into the postseason tournament. The Falcons trail both Akron and Ohio by three points for the final two postseason spots. BGSU faces Northern Illinois (currently 12th place in the league standings), Western Michigan (second place) and Eastern Michigan (ninth place) to round out the 2015 season.
SENIOR DAY
On Sunday afternoon prior to first kick against Western Michigan, Bowling Green will hold senior day for Alexis Smith and Haley Parkinson. There will be a brief ceremony before starting lineups for both teams are announced. The players' parents and current "EYAS" will join Parkinson and Smith on the field for a round of photos.
SCOUTING NORTHERN ILLINOIS
Northern Illinois enters the contest with a 2-12-1 overall record and a 1-6-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies are seeking their first victory since a win over Toledo on Sept. 25. NIU is led by sophomore Lauren Gierman with six goals and one assist for a team-high 13 points. Amy Annala has spent the most time between the posts this season for the Huskies, recording 66 saves in just under 963 minutes on the pitch. NIU sits at the bottom of the MAC West and has a crucial weekend ahead in the race for the MAC Tournament.
LAST MEETING VERSUS THE HUSKIES
(Oct. 26, 2014) BGSU played NIU to a 0-0 draw over 110 minutes of play last season. Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities over the two extra periods of play, as BGSU's Skylar Fleak missed wide in the 104th minute, but not before senior Sidney Huth put a shot on frame in the 97th minute for the Falcons. Cadel totaled eight saves in goal for BGSU. Fleak led the Falcon offense with six total shots, three of which were on frame, while Huth, Kara Ross and Madison Schupbach each had one shot on goal for the match.
