February 14, 2015 | Women's Track and Field
Geneva, Ohio – The Bowling Green indoor track and field team got a strong performance out of its distance runners at the SPIRE Division I Indoor Track & Field Invitational Friday night as the team concluded day one of the final weekend of the regular season.
Redshirt sophomore Mackenzie McMillin ran a strong 5,000 race, posting a time of 17:38.96, good for a personal best by 25 seconds. The mark was just five seconds shy of a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark and places her 12th in the conference this year. Junior Amanda Garlak was right behind with a time of 17:41.18, which was almost 20 seconds faster than her career best.
"Mackenzie and Amanda took nice steps today in the 5,000," BGSU Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "I'm excited for what they accomplished, but also for what it means for them later this track season in that event."
The Falcons competed in limited events Friday over the course of two meets in two different states. Staying at the SPIRE Invitational in Ohio, freshman Cortisha Short was the fastest of five BGSU runners in the 200. She ran the event in 25.49 seconds, just ahead of Kera Lamotte's 25.56.
Brooke Pleger and Makenzie Wheat competed in Michigan at Grand Valley State's The Big Meet, for elite throws competitions. Pleger finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 67-feet-6, just about eight inches shy of the school record she set a week ago.
Competing in the shot put, Wheat placed sixth with a distance of 48-11.
Bowling Green will continue with competition Saturday at the SPIRE Division I Indoor Track & Field Invitational in final preparations for the MAC Championships in two weeks.
