SCOUTING THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
The 2014 MAC East Division Champions enter Saturday's contest at 16-9 overall and 7-6 in league play after snapping a three-game losing streak at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday night with a 78-63 road win. The Bulls, who have the highest RPI in the MAC at 55th nationally, are 8-7 in true road contests this season. Buffalo is known for its offensive fire power, as the Bulls are third in the MAC in points per game at 74.7 and are second in the league in free throw percent at 73.3 percent where they get to the line over 18 times a game. UB is also second in the MAC in rebounding at 37.6 boards per contest. Second-year head coach Bobby Hurley's squad is led by the Karl Malone Award Candidate in Justin Moss, who leads the MAC in both scoring at 18.6 points per game and in rebounding at 9.1 boards per contest. Guard Shannon Evans is also averaging double digit points at 15.1 points per game and is tied with fellow teammate Lamonte Bearden for third in the MAC in assists with an average of 4.4 dimes per outing. THE ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS BUFFALO
The BGSU Falcons hold an 18-11 overall series lead over the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, on the hardwood with the two teams' first meeting back in 1999. The two teams split the regular season series last year with each team winning on its home floor. In fact the two teams have split each of their two contests over the last two seasons. Each of the Falcons' last two wins over the Bulls has come at home in the Stroh Center.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"We've been talking to our team about the target. Within one season we went from a team that's looking for respect and trying to knock off people that are viewed as better than us and now all of a sudden the tables have turned within the same season and none of us in this program currently have ever had to deal with that. There is just a different feeling when you're riding high and everybody is trying to knock you off and everybody wants to be that team that beats the team that's above them and that's where we were at. We've talked and talked and talked about and tried to get them to understand that we're going to take everybody's best shot."
SPECIAL FEATURE: THE BATTLE OF THE MAC'S BEST BIGS - HOLMES & MOSS
Saturday afternoon's contest will feature a battle between perhaps the two best big men in the Mid-American Conference this season in BGSU's Richaun Holmes and UB's Justin Moss. Holmes leads the MAC in blocked shots with 66, an average of 2.8 per game, and in field goal percentage at 57.3 percent on the season. Holmes also ranks third in the MAC in rebounding at 8.0 per contest and is 10th in the MAC in scoring with an average of 14.5 points per game on the year. UB's Moss leads the MAC in both points per game at 18.6 and in rebounding at 9.1 boards per contest on the year. Moss also ranks fifth in the MAC in field goal percentage at 54.0 percent and 11th in free throw percentage at 74.0 percent on the year.
BACK TO THE MAC EAST
Each of the Falcons' last six games, starting with Miami on Wednesday, Feb. 18, will be against the MAC East Division. In fact, BGSU and Buffalo will play each other twice in a 14-day span with the second meeting scheduled for Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, New York.
A WIN WOULD ...
* Give the Falcons an 18-7 record overall on the season, the most wins since 19 in 2008-09.
* Put BGSU at 10-4 in Mid-American Conference play, the most MAC wins since 11 in 2008-09.
* Keep the Falcons in at least a tie for first-place overall in the MAC with four games left to play.
* Put the Falcons at 11-3 overall at home in the Stroh Center on the year.
* Place BGSU at 5-1 overall for the month of February.
* Extend the Falcons' home winning streak to three games over the Bulls.
IT'S ALL UP FOR GRABS DOWN THE HOME STRETCH
With the regular season coming down to the last two weeks, the MAC race is up for grabs as four teams in Bowling Green, Kent State, Toledo and Central Michigan are all tied for the MAC lead at 9-4 overall. Akron is just one game out of first-place with five games to go at 8-5, while Buffalo and Western Michigan are just two games behind the leaders at 7-6 on the MAC season heading into Saturday's contests.
HOLMES ZONING IN ON 1,000
Senior Richaun Holmes is zoning in on the 1,000 career points plateau, as the 6-8 forward currently has totaled 980 points over his three years at BGSU. Holmes is only 20 points shy of the career milestone with five games to play in the regular season. He would become just the 42nd player in BGSU's 100 year history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
HOME SWEET STROH
BGSU has called the Stroh Center home since the 2011-12 season and has posted an overall record of 40-20 at the venue. The Falcons have won seven or more games at home every season since the Stroh's opening for the 2011-12 season and are 10-3 at home thus far this year.
THAT 70'S STROH
BGSU is a perfect 18-0 at the Stroh when scoring 70 points or more in a contest. That means the Falcons have scored 70 or more points in nearly half of their wins in front of the home fans in the Stroh. This season the Falcons have scored 70 or more points at home twice - in a 70-55 win versus Wright State on Nov. 19 and in a 74-58 win over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 21.
BGSU UNDEFEATED FOLLOWING A LOSS THIS SEASON
With the Falcons' 76-74 overtime road win over Central Michigan on Feb. 4, head coach Chris Jans' squad improved to 6-0 in games following a loss in their previous contest. After a loss at Western Kentucky (52-62), the Falcons beat up on Alabama A&M (64-47). Following the tough loss at Dayton (52-56), BGSU bounced back to defeat Cleveland State by double digits (67-57). BGSU would then go and upend USF (79-70) after suffering a loss to Ferris State (68-82) at home on Dec. 21, prior to stifling Ball State (58-46) at home on Jan. 17 following a loss at Akron (50-67) just three days before on Jan. 14. A home win over NIU on Jan. 27 came directly after a loss on the road at Toledo (71-67) on Jan. 24, while the CMU (76-74) road win on Feb. 4 followed a home loss to Akron (68-69) on Jan. 31.
MAKE IT FOUR FOR HOLMES
Senior Richaun Holmes was tabbed the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 16, his fourth MAC weekly award this season. The 6-8 forward also earned the award on Dec. 1, Dec. 29, and then again on Jan. 12. Holmes posted double digit points in both games last week to give him 12 straight games with double figures and help the Falcons go 2-0 overall. Holmes scored 12 points, pulled down six rebounds and turned away four shots in a 65-49 home win over Western Michigan on Wednesday night, Feb. 10. He followed that up with a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks in the Falcons' 79-65 road win at Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 14. Overall for the week, the forward averaged 16.0 points on 61.9 percent shooting overall, including going a percent 2-for-2 behind the three-point line and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
SUPER 17 AND COUNTING
BGSU's 17 wins this season is already more wins than the Falcons had all of last year (12-20) and are the most wins for the Falcons in a single season since posting 19 victories overall in 2011-12. In fact, the Falcons have posted more than 17 wins on the season only two times over the last 10 years (2004-05: (18-11); 2008-09: (19-14)).
DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!
The Falcons have been solid on the defensive end this season, as BGSU ranks 28th in the nation overall in scoring defense at 59.8 points per game allowed. The Falcons are also 23rd in the nation in three-point field goal percentage defense at 29.9 percent on the year. BGSU is also ranked in the top-five in the MAC in scoring defense (1st/59.8 ppg), three-point field goal defense (1st/29.9%) and field goal percentage defense (2nd/40.0%). In fact, Bowling Green's Richaun Holmes leads the league in blocked shots with 66, an average of 2.8 per game, while Zack Denny leads the MAC in steals with an average of 2.0 swipes per contest and 47 on the season.
SUB!!!!!!!!!!
Coach Jans has proven early that he is not afraid to go to his bench, as 15 different players have already seen time on the floor for the Falcons this season, while eight different players are averaging over 15 minutes or more of playing time per game this season. In fact, the Falcons have outscored their opponents by 184 points (557-373) in bench points this year, an average of 23.2 points per game off the bench compared to their opponents 15.5 bench points per outing.
OVER/UNDER ON 60
This season, the benchmark in points has been the number 60. The Falcons are 14-3 overall when they score 60 or more points for the contest and just 3-4 when they score less than 60 points. On the flip side, BGSU is 11-1 on the season when holding its opponents to less than 60 points and just 6-6 when surrendering more than 60 points in the game to its foe.
40/40
Bowling Green has posted an overall record of 14-2 on the season when shooting over 40 percent overall from the floor as a team. The Falcons are also 11-1 in games this season when holding its opponent to less than 40 percent shooting for the game.
50 PERCENT SHOOTING = WIN
BGSU has shot 50 percent or better from the floor as a team this season in five different games. The Falcons shot 51.8 percent at Drake on Nov. 15, 50.0 percent vs. Alabama A&M on Dec. 6, 50.0 percent on the road at USF on Dec. 28, 52.8 percent at Central Michigan on Feb. 4, and most recently 50.9 percent at Ball State on Feb. 14. The Falcons are 5-0 this season when shooting 50 percent or better from the field for the game.
QUARTET OF 600 POINT CAREER SCORERS
The Falcons currently have a quartet of 600 point career scorers on its roster in Richaun Holmes (980), Jehvon Clarke (758), Anthony Henderson (649) and Spencer Parker (611).
FALCONS VERSUS THE MAC WEST IN 2015
BGSU fared well versus the MAC West Division over the regular season slate in cross-divisional match ups. The Falcons went 7-1 versus the West Division this season with two wins each over Ball State and Northern Illinois, as well as at Central Michigan and wins at home versus Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. The Falcons' lone loss to a MAC West team was on the road at Toledo on Jan. 24.
STROLL DOWN THE MAC MEMORY LANE
Last season in 2013-14, the Falcons posted a 6-12 record in the MAC and finished sixth in the East Division. Since winning the MAC East in 2008-09 with an 11-5 conference record, the Falcons have been over .500 in MAC play just once, going 9-7 overall in league play in 2011-12, coming into this season. Over the last five seasons, since 2009-10 and prior to this season, Bowling Green went just 36-46 in MAC play. This year the Falcons are 9-4 in MAC play.
COUNT'EM ON ONE HAND
For the first time since the 2006-07 season, the Falcons were able to count the number of turnovers that they committed on one hand with just five total miscues in the 79-65 road win at Ball State on Feb. 14. The last time BGSU coughed up the ball five times or less in a complete game was against Michigan Tech back on Dec. 27, 2006, when the Falcons committed just four turnovers overall for the contest. The five turnovers is also a season-low for BGSU this year.
LIGHT IT UP, UP, UP ... WE'RE ON FIRE!
As a team the Falcons drained a season-high 12 three-pointers in the 79-65 road win at Ball State on Feb. 14. In the game prior to the Ball State win, BGSU hit 10 three-ball's overall in a 65-49 win at home versus Western Michigan. Over the two game stretch, the Falcons hit a total of 22 three-point field goals and shot 44 percent overall from long distance in the two wins.
FIRST OT WIN IN OVER TWO YEARS
BGSU's 76-74 overtime win on Feb. 4 at Central Michigan not only handed the Chips their first home loss of the season (12-1), but it was also the first overtime win for a Falcons' team since Feb. 2, 2011. The Falcons last overtime win was a 73-70 OT win at NIU during that 2010-11 season.
A SEASON FIRST - FIVE FALCONS IN DOUBLE DIGITS
The Falcons posted a season first on Feb. 4 in the overtime win at Central Michigan, as five different players scored in double digit points for the game. Anthony Henderson (20), Jehvon Clarke (18), Zack Denny (12), Richaun Holmes (10) and Delvin Dickerson (10) all notched 10 points or more in the 76-74 win. The last time BGSU had five players score in double figures in the same game was in a 67-61 road win at Morehead State on Feb. 15, 2013.
WE WILL TAKE THE STAIRS
Bowling Green is 3-0 this season in road games in which the route from the locker room to the court required going either up or down stairs. This includes wins at Detroit, at Kent State and at Central Michigan.
STRONG MONTH OF JANSUARY
The Falcons had a strong month of JANSuary, as BGSU went 6-3 overall for the first month of the year. Coach Jans' squad posted wins over Chicago State, Kent State, Ohio, Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois for the month. Bowling Green is 4-1 to start the month of February with road wins at Central Michigan (Feb. 4) and Northern Illinois (Feb. 7), as well as a home win versus Western Michigan (Feb. 10) and a third road win at Ball State (Feb. 14).
TOP-FIVE CROWD AT THE STROH ON SATURDAY NIGHT, JAN. 31
In the Falcons' 69-68 loss to Akron, BGSU and the Zips played in front of a crowd of 3,859 fans. The huge crowd is the third largest crowd to watch a BGSU men's basketball game in the Stroh Center's four year history.
AN ANOMALY FOR COACH JANS ON JAN. 31
The MAC loss to Akron on Saturday night, Jan. 31, was the first home conference loss for Coach Chris Jans in nearly two years (23 months). He last experienced a home conference loss on the sidelines as part of the staff at Wichita State back on Feb. 27, 2013 when the Shockers loss at home to Evansville in Missouri Valley Conference play.
RETURN TO SENDER
Falcon senior Richaun Holmes has posted a block in all but three games thus far this season and has totaled a season-high five blocks in five different games this year on his way to a team leading 66 blocks on the year. Holmes totaled a new BGSU school record for the most blocks in a single season last year with 88. In just his first two seasons at BGSU, Holmes became the Falcons' all-time career blocks leader and now has 227 career swats. He currently leads the MAC with 2.8 blocks per game this season.
CHARGE!
BGSU junior Delvin Dickerson seemed to be all over the place in the Falcons' 56-46 home win over NIU on Jan. 27. The forward took not one, not two, not three, but four charges on the NIU offense in the game, which is presumed to be a BGSU record (charges are not an official statistic).
BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE-DOUBLES FOR DENNY
After posting his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 58-46 win over Ball State on Jan. 17, sophomore guard Zack Denny followed with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in the home rout of Eastern Michigan, 74-58, on Jan. 21. Denny is the first Falcon to post a double-double in two consecutive games since Cameron Black did it on Nov. 26 & 27 of 2013-14 at the Cancun Challenge.
BLOCK NUMBER 200 FOR HOLMES
Senior forward Richaun Holmes tallied his 200th career block in the second half of the Falcons 58-46 win over Ball State on Jan. 17. Holmes, who currently has 227 career swats, is the all-time career blocks leader in BGSU history.
NON-CONFERENCE SEASON IS OVER
BGSU went 8-3 over its 11 non-conference games this season. The eight non-conference victories is the most by a Falcons' team since both the 2009-10 and 2008-09 teams each posted eight non-conference wins on the year.
HOLMES HAULS IN 500TH REBOUND
In the Falcons' 58-35 home win over Chicago State on Saturday night, Jan. 3, senior Richaun Holmes pulled down five rebounds for the game. While that is not a game-high in rebounds for the 6-8 forward, it was enough to give him his 500th career rebound during his time at BGSU.
NEW STROH CENTER RECORDS SET TO START 2015
With BGSU's 32 three-point field goal attempts at home versus Chicago State on Jan. 3, the Falcons set a new Stroh Center record for the most three-point attempts by a BGSU team in a single game in the Stroh Center. The previous record was 26 three-point field goal attempts versus Morehead State on Feb. 18, 2012. The Falcons also set a new record in the fewest points scored by an opponent in the Stroh Center by holding Chicago State to just 35 points for the game, five points less than the previous low of 40 points by Northern Illinois back on Feb. 4, 2012.
MAGIC NUMBER FOR HOLMES IS 26
The magic number for forward Richaun Holmes has proven to be 26 - in that he has posted a career-high 26 points twice this season. Holmes had 26 points versus Ferris State on Dec. 21, but not before he matched his career-high of 26 points on Nov. 30 in a last second win at Detroit. The 6-8 forward first scored his career-high 26 points last season at Xavier.
RECORD SETTING DEFENSIVE EFFORT FOR BGSU
In the Falcons' 58-35 home win over Chicago State, the 35 points allowed by BGSU was the lowest points total allowed by a Falcons' team in a single game since BGSU held Denison to only 34 points in 1981-82. The 35 points scored by Chicago State is also the fewest points scored by a BGSU opponent in the Stroh Center, five points less than the previous low of 40 points by Northern Illinois back on Feb. 4, 2012.
HOME SHOOTING WOES HAMPER FALCONS IN LOSS TO MIAMI
Despite taking a 33-31 lead into the halftime break over the Miami RedHawks on Feb. 18, the Falcons struggled to make baskets in the second half in a 67-56 home loss to Miami. BGSU, who went just over seven minutes without a made field goal in the second half of play, made just 8-of-25 (32 percent) shot attempts in the final 20 minutes of play, including going 0-of-11 from behind the three-point line. For the game, the Falcons shot just 36 percent (18-of-50) overall and was outscored by six at the free throw line (20-14), 16 in points in the paint (36-20) and by 14 in bench points (29-15) in the loss.
MAKE IT A SERIES SWEEP OF BALL STATE FOR BGSU
Coach Jans' squad made it look easy on Feb. 14, defeating the Ball State Cardinals 79-65 to complete the regular season series sweep of the MAC West Division foe. The Falcons shot 50.9 percent overall, hit a season-high 12 three-pointers, and committed a season-low five turnovers in the wire-to-wire double digit win over the Cardinals. In the two teams' first meeting, BGSU held Ball State to just 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) shooting and forced the Cardinals into 10 turnovers in the second half of play in the 58-46 come from behind win on Jan. 17. The Falcons held Ball State to just 19 points over the final 20 minutes of the contest, while scoring 35 points of their own in the home MAC win.
FALCONS CORRAL BRONCOS IN HUGE DOUBLE DIGIT WIN
The Falcons' defense held Western Michigan to its lowest scoring output of the season in a 65-49 home win at the Stroh Center on Feb. 10. BGSU held the Broncos to just 17 made field goals on 34 percent shooting and forced them into 17 turnovers for the game. Off those 17 turnovers, the Falcons scored 27 points, as BGSU shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) overall and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from behind the three-point line in the win.
BGSU COMPLETES SWEEP OF THE NIU HUSKIES
Bowling Green overcame a 10-0 first half deficit to outscore Northern Illinois 41-34 in the second half to post a 69-65 road win over the Huskies on Feb. 7. The Falcons, who shot 56.5 percent in the second half of play, opened up the second half with an 8-0 run to take the lead from the Huskies en route to the win. The win was the second on the season over NIU, as BGSU held the Huskies to only 46 points in a 56-46 home win less than two weeks earlier on Jan. 27 at the Stroh.
FALCONS SHOOT DOWN THE CHIPS OF CMU
Bowling Green shot a season-high 52.8 percent from the field overall to shoot down the MAC's leading offensive team in the CMU Chippewas in a 76-74 overtime win on Feb. 4. The Falcons, who also shot 42.1 percent from behind the three-point line and 75 percent from the charity stripe for the game, had a season-high five different players score in double figures in the win. The 76 points are the third most points scored by the Falcons in a single game this season - 79 at USF on Dec. 28 and 77 at Drake on Nov. 15 - all of which were road wins for Coach Jans' squad.
LAST SECOND SHOT FALLS SHORT IN ONE-POINT HOME LOSS TO AKRON
The Falcons saw the Zips get an offensive rebound and put back basket with 3.7 seconds left to put the visitors up one. BGSU's last second three-point attempt fell short of the rim, as Akron escaped with a 69-68 win over the Falcons at the Stroh Center. The Falcons led by as much as 14 points, yet struggled to put the game away late as Akron outscored BGSU 16-9 over the final five minutes of the contest.
FALCONS FALL IN THE BATTLE OF I-75 IN FRONT OF 7,392 FANS
The Battle of I-75 rivalry was all it was supposed to be and more on Jan. 24, as the Falcons and Rockets went back-and-forth in a game that saw 17 lead changes, six ties and the contest go down to the final minutes of play. However, the Rockets were able to use late free throws to hold off the Falcons, 71-67. The difference in the contest was at the free throw line, where the Rockets were 17-of-25 (68 percent) compared to the Falcons 8-of-16 (50 percent), a point differential of nine points for the game.
FALCONS SHOOT DOWN THE EAGLES IN HOME WIN
BGSU as a team shot 25-of-55 (45.5 percent) for the game, including knocking down 11-of-25 (44 percent) from behind the three-point line in a 74-58 home win over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 21. The Falcons, who had six different players make at least one three-ball for the game, hit 11 three-pointers overall to match its season-high. BGSU had four players in double figures in Anthony Henderson (17), Richaun Holmes (13), Delvin Dickerson (12) and Zack Denny (10).
FROM WIRE TO WIRE, FALCONS TAME BOBCATS
The BGSU Falcons led from start to finish in a 69-54 home MAC win over the Ohio Bobcats on Jan. 10. In the win, BGSU led by as much as 21 points late in the second half and outscored Ohio 35-25 over the final 20 minutes of play to secure the double digit win. BGSU controlled the paint for most of the contest, out-rebounding Ohio 41-34 and outscoring the Bobcats 30-14 in points in the paint. The BGSU defense held Ohio to just eight made baskets in the second half (8-of-27), four of which were from behind the three-point line.
