Falcons Break School Record On Day 1 Of MAC Championships

Ypsilanti, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University swim and dive team is tied for fourth place after Wednesday night's opening relay events at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Eastern Michigan.

The 200 medley relay team of Estela Davis, Kristin Filby, Maria Galic and Kayla Effinger nearly broke a school record, finishing the race with a time of 1:40.61 and placing fourth overall.

The second and final race of day one competition was the 800 freestyle relay where the Falcons shattered a BGSU school record and finished in third place. Victoria Griffin, Tara Capouch, Franziska Wohlert and Hannah Newman swam a team time of 7:16.79. The previous school record of 7:20.05 was set last season.

"We had a solid start of the meet," said head coach Petra Martin. "As I anticipated, it will be a very close meet and we can already see it after the first session. We are excited for tomorrow morning."

Defending MAC Champion Akron, along with Buffalo and EMU are all leading heading into day two of MAC Championships.

The Falcons return to Jones Natatorium tomorrow morning for preliminaries at 11 a.m. and then final swims will take place at 7 p.m.
