Live Stats for Friday's Match
The young and shorthanded Falcons dropped a 7-0 decision at Michigan State on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21). Due to injuries, BGSU fielded a lineup of just five players, forfeiting at the third doubles and sixth singles flights. BG's lineup consisted of five first-year Falcons.
Two of those Falcons, freshmen Megan Miller and Emily Witt, battled an MSU doubles team to a 3-3 standoff at the top flight before the match was halted. Sophomore Leeah Floyd and freshman Sydney Seeley competed for the Brown and Orange at the second doubles flight at MSU.
BGSU's singles lineup on Saturday consisted of Miller at the top flight, followed by Witt, Floyd, sophomore Antonina Farrar and Seeley.
IPFW will enter the weekend with a 7-4 record in dual-match play, but the Mastodons have lost two-straight matches after a 7-2 start. IPFW is 6-2 at home and 1-2 on the road, with losses to Toledo (5-2) and MSU (7-0) in the team's most recent competition, on Feb. 15. Last weekend, the 'Dons saw a scheduled match at Cleveland State postponed due to weather.
IPFW was picked to finish second in the Summit League in 2015, according to the league's preseason coaches' poll. The Mastodons went 18-10 overall last year under coach Eric Burns, advancing to the championship match of the Summit League Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. Sophomore Mayu Sato was named the SL Player of the Year as well as the league's Newcomer of the Year last season.
IPFW competed at the BGSU Invitational in September, with Sato winning the title at the number-one singles flight. Sophomore Sara Sherif captured the seventh-flight crown that weekend.
BGSU leads IPFW, 3-0, in the all-time series between the teams. The Falcons captured a narrow 4-3 victory in the teams' last meeting, just over two years ago (Feb. 22, 2013) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The teams also met in back-to-back seasons in 2010 and '11, with the Brown and Orange picking up a 6-1 win in the first-ever series meeting at the PTC (Jan. 30, 2010), then going to Fort Wayne the following season and winning a 5-2 result (Feb. 12, 2011).
Following this weekend's match, the Falcons will be idle from competition for more than two weeks, before heading to the Windy City for a dual vs. UIC on Sunday, March 15. The Falcons' next home match is also the Mid-American Conference opener, against Northern Illinois on Friday, March 20.
